It's been five years since the York Central masterplan successfully gained planning consent, and it's a project that we at Aberfield are immensely proud to have played a key role in alongside our partners, Homes England, City of York Council, Network Rail and the National Railway Museum. We delivered the communications and engagement across the project from access consultations and the final masterplan 'Festival of York Central' consultation, through branding, stakeholder engagement, PR, social and issues management. It was also the start of our ongoing journey with transformational schemes in York, which includes working with York Minster (Chapter of York) on the adoption of its Neighbourhood Plan, the first of its kind to be used to map the future care of a cathedral or heritage estate, and the innovative regeneration of Coney Street Riverside by the Helmsley Group. We love working on projects like these for the lasting impact they deliver to communities. So it's great to see the plans coming forward for York Central from McLaren Property | Living | Regeneration and Arlington Real Estate and see how that masterplan is now becoming a physical reality in the city. It's now critical that strategic communications plays a further role in the next phase of York Central's development, so its importance and significance to the city, the region and the North isn't overlooked. We were thrilled to welcome the Leader of City of York Council, Claire Douglas, and David Skaith, the first Mayor of York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, to the York Central development site today. Their visit underscored the immense potential of this 45-hectare regeneration project site to bring a vibrant new dimension to our historic city. York Central is set to become a beacon of cultural and economic growth by transforming underused land into a vibrant and distinctive mix of: 🏡 residential neighbourhoods 🎨 cultural spaces 🌳 public realm 🏢 and a high-quality commercial core All in the heart of one of the UK’s desirable cities. This project will drive inward investment, create affordable housing and enhance transport connectivity - all of which are crucial for regional empowerment. Strong political leadership is crucial to realising this ambitious vision and we are grateful for the support and leadership of Claire and David as we work together to make York Central a reality. 🤝 #YorkCentral #YorkDevelopment #UrbanTransformation #CulturalGrowth #EconomicDevelopment #PoliticalLeadership #YorkshirePowerhouse

Public engagement is often central to Our Future Cities work, and there is always room to learn from others, like PUBLIC PRACTICE. Here are some lessons for the Global South context: — Create "urban rooms", flexible spaces for ongoing community engagement, to support continuous dialogue and conversations between residents and developers. — Be open and clear about project constraints. For example: clear communication about what aspects of development can be influenced through engagement — Tailoring outreach strategies to include hard-to-reach and marginalised groups by meeting them in familiar spaces
Public engagement can often be seen as a hurdle in placemaking, and for the public, it can be perceived as a tick-box exercise that doesn’t result in change. Next Tuesday's #PublicTalks event brings together Associates to share best practice examples to foster public engagement built on collaboration and trust. Watch the recording of the Talk: https://lnkd.in/eudiMcPC You can submit your questions for the panel in advance: https://lnkd.in/ecu85_ci This talk features insights from: — Barnaby Johnston, Development Manager at Greater London Authority — Hafsa Bell, Strategic Applications: Principal Planning Officer at Guildford Borough Council — Lucy Large, Principal Urban Design Officer at Dacorum Borough Council — Preena Mistry, Project Manager at Rochdale Development Agency — Rebecca Crofton, Senior Town Centre Project Officer at Barnet Council — Sandhya Parekh Regeneration Manager at Croydon Council — Simon Lord, Housing Development Manager at Guildford Borough Council Join us at 13:00 for a live streaming of the Talk and at 13:45 for a live Q&A. #Cambridge and #Peterborough currently top charts as the fastest growing cities 🏙️ The incredible boom in local businesses, especially high-tech, has brought prosperity and opportunity to some areas. However, this success is not universal and many communities in #Cambridgeshire face challenges of inequality and disadvantage, with Cambridge regularly topping the league as the UK’s most unequal city. Why Should Bellingham Take the Majority of Growth Over the Next 20 years? As Whatcom County’s cities meet to plan for the next 20-years of growth, we believe that Bellingham has a responsibility to take a higher annual percentage of future growth than Ferndale, Lynden, Everson, Blaine, Sumas and Nooksack. Centralizing growth and development in Bellingham will help reduce the overall environmental impact to the County while fostering a more vibrant economic vision for the future of the City. Read more about why growth should be centralized in Bellingham, by following the article link. https://lnkd.in/g3neHJhX . . . #housingaffordability #affordablehousing #housingdevelopment #housingcrisis #housingsolutions #housingforbellingham #bellinghamwa #whatcomcounty

🔓 Planning for impact... Over the decades, we've seen an astonishing rate of transformation, not only across the city region, but in the nation's approach to planning as well (if not quite at the same pace). We've seen regional planning, neighbourhood planning and most recently in our city, Greater Manchester Combined Authority's adoption of the sub-regional Places for Everyone plan. Whatever the scale, forward planning is intended to deliver on town planning's big mission: achieving sustainable development in economic, social and environmental terms. But, across this variety, it's development frameworks that we hold most dear, in part for their... ✅ Highly effective nature ✅ Quicker preparation despite greater detail ✅ Fostering of public-private collaboration ✅ Influence for councils' regeneration ambitions Intrigued? Many of you know and appreciate Howard Chan, who has ably served the City of Sacramento as its city manager for many years. His time there saw him endure political attacks against his home and the volatile environment that comes with a large city in California. Howard will be wrapping up his service in Sacramento next week, but this article provides some good context and summation on his work in the City. It is a really nice summary piece. It is a good reminder for why California City Management Foundation selected Howard as their city manager of the year n 2023. #CityManagers #LocalGovernment #FriendsOfTripepiSmith

The Atlanta Beltline is set to transform the Bankhead neighborhood with a $270 million mixed-use development on a 31-acre site. This ambitious project aims to provide up to 1,100 apartments and townhomes, with an emphasis on affordability—a significant 30% of residences will be dedicated to families earning between 50-80% of the area median income. By incorporating commercial space and enhancing connectivity to public green spaces and transit, this initiative underscores the Beltline's mission to create inclusive communities. Let's celebrate innovative development that prioritizes both affordability and accessibility. #PathSynch
