How might we drive defense innovation? Draw more cartoons. Jason Stack was dropping knowledge bombs this morning at a panel for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)'s innovation summit. Some of them were reminders of best practices. A few of his insights were entirely new to me. Jason talked about getting feedback from users in the fleet early and often. They needed to source problems directly from the people experiencing them. This approach was critical to the success of his team, the Unmanned Task Force, led by Michael Stewart. One of the ways they sourced problems was drawing cartoonish sketches based on what the user said. A simple sketch helped his team get users talking. The innovator and the user with the problem get into a learning loop. Why is this helpful? Because a sketch gets big picture feedback rather than granular feedback ("make this button blue, not red") from a high fidelity mock up. It's also easy to make changes to sketches, so the team can iterate rapidly. This quick feedback helps us get the problem right. That is a critical first step before jumping into the slower, more expensive phases. Test first, then get into design, and only then proceed to build.
