This is one of the findings of the paper 'Overcoming (vegan) burnout: Mass-gatherings can provide respite and rekindle shared identity and social action efforts in moralized minority groups,' which was published in Political Psychology. Professor of Sustainability & Marketing Jan Willem Bolderdijk is one of the co-authors of the paper. Interviews with visitors of a vegan lifestyle festival showed that these events can provide a restorative retreat from the majority, meat-eating society. For vegans, attending is an opportunity to 'recharge' their beliefs, seek out social connection, and to be inspired by a collective identity-focused experience. Beauty comes in all shades, and more and more beauty brands are embracing this by putting skin above aesthetics. However, discrimination still exists with beauty standards that still push people to lighten their skin, often with dangerous products. According to Statista, the global skin-lightening market currently valued at $7.4 billion, is forecasted to reach some $8.9 billion by 2027. This is quite frightening because these products contain mercury that could lead to rashes, scarring, and even damage to the nervous system. Thankfully, there's hope! The Global Environment Fund and UN Environment Programme led project is working to eliminate mercury in skin-lightening products and hold producing brands accountable. They're supporting bans with governments and working with the World Health Organization and Biodiversity Research Institute.
