There is an acute correlation between diet and wellness in young people. Everyday throughout August we run a programme for young people who at school receive free school meals. This programme is open to kids that are home educated as well. Here’s the difference. The home educated kids generally don’t consume sugar rich foods and as a consequence they are: -alert -bright -energetic We have to understand that to improve a child’s schooling and wellbeing, diet is the key. Cheap, sugar rich food needs to be off the menu for kids until they conclude school. #fitandfed #sugarfreediet #outdoors #thebountyproject

In the spirit of #NationalRoadSafetyWeek, we previously introduced one of our personas, Abby, and explored what makes her feel safe when walking to school. While safety isn't one-size-fits-all, there are universal elements, such as formalised pedestrian crossings, that enhance road safety in general. Another crucial element in ensuring safety for Abby and others on their way to school are the yellow lines painted along the edge of the road. Do you know how yellow lines around schools keep kids safe? Check out this informative video by Prue Oswin for a detailed explanation. Throughout this month, we'll continue to explore and share insights on how safety is perceived by some of our personas and how this helps us plan safe active transport networks for all. Water Safety Awareness at Aldercar High School Community Engagement Roadshow Today, Heanor On-Call Fire Station participated in the Community Engagement Roadshow at Aldercar High School, organised by Heanor and Langley Mill Police SNT. The event was a fantastic success, bringing together various partners and offering numerous activities for young people to get involved in. As we approach the school holidays, especially during hot weather, the risk of drowning increases significantly among children. In the UK, an average of 40-50 children drown each year. Spot the Dangers of Water: Very Cold Temperatures: Can cause shock and inhibit movement. Hidden Currents: Can pull you under quickly and unexpectedly. Fast-Flowing Water: Be cautious around locks and weirs. Deep Water: It's often difficult to judge the depth. Hidden Rubbish or Debris: Can trap, snag, or cut you. Steep, Slimy Banks: Making it hard to get out of the water. No Lifeguards: Most outdoor waterways are not supervised. Water Pollution: Can cause illness. FLOAT to Live (Combatting Cold Water Shock): Fight the Instinct to Panic: Stay calm and avoid swimming hard. Lean Back: Keep your airway clear. Open Your Body: Extend your arms and legs, and push your stomach up. Move Gently: Use your hands and feet to help you float. Give It Time: In 60-90 seconds, you’ll be able to control your breathing. Stay safe and enjoy your holidays!
