I am really looking forward to this lecture. It’s an honor to have Jonathan Natanian with us. Here is the complete abstract: Beyond Green Buildings: on holistic environmental performance design Imagine a future where our built environments contribute positively to our planet. Our goal is ambitious: achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050 and limit global warming to just 1.5°C. But how can the field of architecture drive us toward this sustainable future? This lecture explores the pivotal role of architectural design in this quest. Historically, architects used intuitive methods that harmonized with the environment. Some experts argue that reviving these traditional practices is crucial, but is that sufficient for modern challenges? Alternatively, a growing number champion the use of advanced digital tools that integrate environmental performance data directly into the design process. However, transitioning to a fully digitized workflow raises questions about what might be overlooked or lost. This lecture from the Environmental Performance Design Lab delves into the evolution from traditional to computational design methodologies. We will explore how these approaches are not just about enhancing efficiency but about deepening our understanding and implementation of sustainable practices. By bridging historical insights with cutting-edge technologies, we aim to demonstrate how modern architecture can effectively contribute to environmental sustainability.

🌱 How can design shape a sustainable future? It's time for us to rethink the way we live and design and build. 💡 Developed by William McDonough Architects for EXPO 2000, the Hannover Principles inspire designers to create solutions that are both innovative and sustainable. These principles emphasise the need for: 🔗 Interdependence: Recognising how human design interacts with and depends on nature. ♻️ Responsibility: Taking ownership of the consequences our designs have on people and the planet. 🌿 Respect for natural systems: Designing with nature, not against it. Which principle resonates most with you the most? Share your thoughts below! 💬👇 #thewinningformulaforinnovation

Urban trees are powerful assets in cities: 1. Heat Reduction: Trees can lower urban temperatures by 20-45°F, mitigating heat islands (Environmental Pollution, 2019). 2. Air Quality: They remove pollutants like ozone and particulate matter, improving public health (Urban Forestry & Urban Greening, 2020). 3. Mental Health: Access to green spaces can reduce stress and improve mood (Scientific Reports, 2018). Urban trees are essential for a healthier, cooler, and more vibrant city environment.
