One of my best friends in the Indian Police Service recently told me the story of his boss at a paramilitary organization, who used to tell his staff, "After 5 pm, I want all of you on the sports ground -- nobody should be seen in the office." So one day, an officer protested saying, "Sir, we have so much work. How can we leave at 5 pm?" The boss said, "Let me tell you. I am not just the chief of this organisation, but I am also temporarily heading three other paramilitaries (leading over half a million soldiers.) And if I am leaving office at 5 PM, what is your excuse?" And this was not empty talk. This officer kept himself so fit that during his field visits, he would walk along India's borders for hours -- even his younger colleagues struggled to keep pace. I don't know the secret of his working until 5 PM but here is my guess -- delegation, focusing on high leverage items, and not wasting time. When you are at the top, your time has very high leverage. You can spend an hour quibbling over minor matters or chit-chatting, or you can take a critical decision that impacts millions -- in the same time, you make million-times higher impact. The key is 'leverage' -- prioritize things with disproportionately higher impact. Don't get lost in minutiae. Work with focus. And ruthlessly eliminate time-suckers and distractors (e.g., useless meetings). If someone running a veritable army can do a 9-to-5, I suspect we can all work at least a little bit smarter. *** To be calmly productive in a chaotic world, check out our Zen Productivity program @ www.habitstrong.com

On this Remembrance Day, we honor the bravery and sacrifice of our veterans. As we remember their courage, let's also think about how we can better support them as they age. The recent research led by National Institute on Ageing summarizes 6 recommendations on how we better support our veterans with health challenges they face, drawing particular attention to the needs of CAF Veterans who have served Canada after 1954, a group that is not only ageing, but one that is entering later life with more complex physical and mental health, social and personal circumstances than the average Canadian. #RemembranceDay #LestWeForget #VeteranHealth Nissa Shariff, Laura Wood, James Anderson, Sebastien Audette, CD, MPA, PMP, Dean Tremblay, Jeff Rodney, Angela Lianos
Expanding & improving programs to meet the unique physical and mental health and socioeconomic needs of Canada’s ageing Veterans is vital for ensuring their well-being. As we honour Veterans this #RemembranceDay, let’s also recognize the unique health challenges they face. The trend of suicide-quitting is on the rise in the Indian paramilitary forces Suicides among members of India's 3 paramilitary forces Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), National Security Guards (NSG) and Assam Rifles (AR) are on the rise. 730 soldiers have committed suicide in these forces in the last four years since 2020. Along with suicide, there is also a growing trend of voluntary retirement, quitting and not returning to work after taking time off. The Union Home Ministry has recently submitted a report to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India. It said that among CAPF, NSG and AR members, 144 committed suicide in 2020, 157 in 2021, 138 in 2022, 157 in 2023 and 134 since January 2024 — a total of 730. Besides, 47 thousand 891 people voluntarily retired and 7 thousand 664 people left their jobs within this period.

The obesity crisis poses a significant threat to military readiness and #nationalsecurity, as highlighted in the '24 National Defense Strategy (NDS). With only 9% of those in prime recruiting age eligible to serve, recruitment shortfalls are increasingly attributed to rising obesity rates & physical inactivity among American youth, which directly impacts the military's ability to maintain a fit & capable force. Key Points: * Recruitment Challenges: Approximately 27% of young adults aged 17-24 are ineligible for #military service due to #obesity, making it the leading medical disqualifier for recruits. This statistic translates to over 9 million potential recruits unable to serve because of excess weight. * Health Implications: Obesity is linked to numerous health issues, including diabetes, heart disease & certain cancers. These health problems not only affect individual service members but also compromise the overall operational readiness of the military. *Financial Burden: The United States Department of Defense (DoD) spends about $8.1 billion annually on obesity-related healthcare costs & lost workdays due to overweight & obesity among active-duty personnel, further straining military #resources. * Increased Injury Risk: Obesity significantly raises the risk of injuries among service members, which can lead to higher rates of medical discharges & decreased mission readiness. For example, overweight individuals are more likely to suffer musculoskeletal injuries, which have been a major concern for #military health. To understand how obesity impacts the military & its health system, check out the video below with Tracey Perez Koehlmoos, PhD, MHA, as she discusses this pressing issue in her presentation, "Obesity in US Army Soldiers: The Impact on Readiness and the Military Health System." A startling point from the video is that service members gain an average of 25 to 30 lbs. in their first year after leaving active duty. This weight gain is concerning as they transition to civilian life, making it essential to address this challenge directly. Dr. Koehlmoos' presentation begins at 3:20. Conclusion: To address the obesity crisis effectively, the #DoD must continue to meet people where they're at & provide initiatives that focus on behavior change, education & fun when promoting #physicalactivity among military youth & their families. Initiatives could include: * Developing comprehensive wellness programs focusing on #nutrition and fitness. * Collaborate with civilian organizations (i.e., YMCA, large fitness chains) to create reasonable solutions for #obesity & #inactivity. By #investing in these initiatives, the DoD (with our support) can help ensure a healthier, more capable military force, thereby ensuring our national security & #readiness for future #challenges. #media #news #culture #writers

🌟 A Call for Reflection on the Agnipath Scheme 🌟 Congress MP Shashi Tharoor recently voiced his concerns regarding the Agniveer scheme, stating that the initiative may dilute the quality of training and professional opportunities within the Indian Army. 🇮🇳 🔍 Key Points from Tharoor's Critique: Short Training Duration: Training soldiers for just 6 months to serve for 3-4 years raises questions about readiness and professionalism. ⚔️ Impact on Reputation: The Indian Army is renowned for its professionalism globally. Maintaining this standard is crucial for national integrity. 🌍 Financial Motivations: Tharoor believes the scheme is primarily a cost-cutting measure aimed at saving on pensions. 💰 Prime Minister Narendra Modi, however, defends the Agnipath scheme as a necessary reform to modernize the armed forces. 🛡️ He emphasizes the goal of creating a younger, battle-ready force, while urging against politicizing the issue. 🔗 Why This Matters: The future of our armed forces depends on the quality of training and the welfare of our soldiers. Engaging in constructive dialogue about reforms is essential for the betterment of our nation. 💬 Join the conversation: What are your thoughts on the Agnipath scheme? #Agniveer #IndianArmy #ShashiTharoor #DefenceReforms #Leadership #MilitaryTraining #NationalSecurity #YouthEmpowerment #PensionReforms #PoliticalDialogue

📢 Concerned About Obesity in Our Military? Let's Talk. The obesity crisis in our country is more than just a number—it's affecting our military readiness and our standing in the world. 📊 🔍 Key Facts: * Nearly 70% of U.S. service members are overweight or obese. * Obesity rates in U.S. adults nearly doubled from 22% to 42% between 1988 and 2020. * 20% of active Army soldiers are obese, with 40-50% overweight. * 💥 Impact: * Overweight troops struggle with physical training, risk early discharge, and face limited job prospects. * Unhealthy active duty members are more prone to injuries, impacting unit readiness and overall military effectiveness. * An unhealthy formation is a combat ineffective formation; the lethality of our military is at risk. As a health coach and an active duty military spouse for over 22 years and counting, I understand the challenges and demands of military life. I’ve seen firsthand how this affects our service members. I’m here to help you create personal health and wellness plans that can make a difference. By focusing on better nutrition, consistent physical activity, healthy habits, and overall well-being, we can improve individual health and enhance our military's effectiveness. 🌟💪 Leaders, take care of yourselves too. My husband, a commander, is a great example of what it means to lead from the front. It's important to him to be a fit CO so he can set an example for his Marines and be the best leader he can be. Let's work together to build healthier habits, improve fitness, and ensure our troops are ready for any mission. Our country's strength depends on it.
