"Life, space, buildings - in that order". This Jan Gehl quote perfectly summarises the conclusions (or at least my conclusions) from the recent Accelerating Action seminar at Sheppard Robson . The panel—including Sarah Allan (Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government), Helena Rivers (AECOM), Lee Bennett (Sheppard Robson), and Joanna Yarrow (Human Nature)—discussed how to align the mandatory and urgent drop in carbon emissions with building the cities, neighbourhoods, and homes we need. The discussion reinforced several critical points: 1️⃣ Start with a Vision: Joanna Yarrow underlined the importance of the urban scale and how a vision of everyday life should guide policies, communication and action. She shared insights from Malmö, where sustainable transport and services are integrated into daily life. It brought me back to my time in Copenhagen, where Jan Gehl's vision of human-scale cities has now brought cycle paths, bike storage, and even footrests for cyclists! As Sarah Allan pointed out, public support is vital—abstract numbers won’t engage people; a positive, compelling vision will. 2️⃣ Implementation at Scale: Helena Rivers highlighted the challenges in standardising net zero across different scales. Real sustainability must cross these scales—delivered at the city and neighbourhood level—precisely because it affects all aspects of life. This requires shared standards. From a design and policy perspective, professional education is critical to ensuring planners can navigate the complexities of integrating sustainability into housing, transport, and public space. 3️⃣ Focus on Retrofit: Helena Rivers and Lee Bennett stressed the importance of retrofitting without creating high carbon emissions. They also noted how mass production in housing often sidelines the best designers, missing opportunities for sustainable, high-quality homes. The positive takeaway is that we have the vision and the tools; now, it’s about the collective effort to bring them together- quickly. #Urbanism #Sustainability #NetZero #Architecture #PublicSupport #Copenhagen #Malmo #Retrofitting #JanGehl

For a few weeks in the summer of 2023, the streets of Munich's Südliche Au and Walchenseeplatz districts were transformed into temporary green and recreational areas. This initiative sparked numerous public discussions about the future of urban traffic and neighborhood design. Researchers from the Technische Universität München have now evaluated the outcomes of these real-world laboratories. The results are in: a majority of residents rate them positively! 🌟 🏡 Community Involvement Households expressed a desire for further initiatives to transform street spaces into areas for greenery, recreation, and alternative mobility options. 🌍 Climate Action and Mobility Most people highlighted the need for action due to climate change and are willing to engage in experiments on the future of mobility. 🌳 Support for Green Spaces A clear majority supports the permanent conversion of parking lots and streets into green spaces. Additional footpaths, cycle paths, spaces for play, exercise, culture, and neighborhood meeting places are also very popular. 🚀 Empowering Change While the transport and mobility transition faces challenges, empowering people to get involved can turn headwinds into tailwinds, driving successful and necessary change processes. https://go.tum.de/388607 MCube - Munich Cluster for the future of Mobility in Metropolitan Regions Landeshauptstadt München Digital Hub Mobility by UnternehmerTUM UnternehmerTUM TUM Urban Design Hans Sauer Stiftung Stadtwerke München GmbH TUM - Lehrstuhl für Verkehrstechnik #UrbanMobility #SustainableCities #GreenSpaces #ClimateAction #CommunityEngagement #FutureOfMobility #RealWorldLaboratories #UrbanPlanning #Collaboration #ChangeMakers #GreenLiving #PublicSpaces #CitizenScience #Sustainability

🏗️ The starting signal for the Segelflieger Quartier – one of #Berlin|s largest construction projects! The official presentation of the ‘Segelflieger Quartier Berlin’ neighbourhood brand marked the start of a major residential construction project. Around 1,800 new apartments, both rent-controlled and privately financed, will be built on 214,000 sqm by 2029. The district will also expand the Technologiepark Adlershof with 153,000 sqm of commercial space. The district combines living, working and leisure in a historic aviation location – where the first motorised flight attempts took place in 1909. 🏠✈️ As Christian Gaebler, Senator for Urban Development, stated: "Work and living, education, recreation, local services, and community spaces must be viewed, planned, and realized in conjunction. This is how vibrant neighborhoods grow." The new district will also provide daycares, a community center, and green spaces for everyone. 🌳 Oliver Igel, District Mayor of Treptow-Köpenick: “The development of the 'Segelflieger Quartier Berlin' is a prime example of how we can transform historical sites and industrial wastelands in Berlin, while simultaneously creating modern, sustainable neighborhoods." Construction is set to begin in late 2025. 🏗️ 👉 For more background and details, check the first comment below. #AirportRegionBB #UrbanDevelopment BAUWERT AG

Urban Rhythms. Urban space are full of life. Urban spaces provide space for movements. For daily flows. People go, pass-by and arrive. To work, for leisure, to meet others. Public transport sport like this are crucial the overall mobility system. It offers choices and smooth transfer actions. From tram to bus, from a walk to metro, from a bike trip to the tram. All happens above and beneath the surfaces of this square/large street. ... Rotterdam, 20.03.2024, Eendrachtsplein ... the Future Design of Street - association

Emerging from the 1960s, Denmark saw an explosion in collaborative housing, known as bofællesskaber, that began to crop-up across the country as an alternative to the “nuclear” way of life and conventional urban developments. Part of the movement involved building your own home. Perhaps due to increasing costs, changes in occupancy and less support from authorities, bofællesskaber have seen a decline in self-built projects. I recently took part in a competition to design micro-dwellings where I drew a community of small dwelling within the existing bofællesskab of Andelssamfundet in Hjortshøj. The aim of the project was to create and sustain a sense of community developed through a shared involvement in the design and build of their own homes. The unit's small-scale presented a manageable project, that required less materials, could be built off-site, more cheaply and easier to build than conventional housing. A robust but flexible modular design would give younger people, who want to live in a bofællesskab, the opportunity to effectively take part in the design and build of their own homes. https://lnkd.in/eRb94Zt4 The Vertical City exhibition showcases Foster+ Partners' design work focusing on the firm's most iconic buildings throughout the world. The skyscraper is emblematic of the modern age city and is a reminder that the city is arguably civilization’s greatest invention. A vertical community, well served by public transport, can be a model of sustainability, especially when compared with a sprawling low-rise equivalent in a car-dependent suburb.

9moIt would be good to know who is delivering the 'linear park' - this has been a key principle from the very beginning but doesn't seem to have been subsidised by the developments to date...
