Within Chicago, selective enrollment and magnet schools feed from all over the city, offering public educations that outrank even private and suburban alternatives. Meanwhile, in some suburbs, no testing is necessary to attend a high-quality high school, just down the road. A new ranking narrows down schools both in and outside the city: Northside College Prep and New Trier High School both came in at No. 1. #chicagorealestate #chicagolandrealestate #chicagopublicschools #CPS https://lnkd.in/gCF29QUY

My recent opinion column: Niagara Falls Central School District's residency rules: Roadblock to Empire Enrollment? An insightful article on the Niagara Falls Central School District’s residency policy and its impact on teacher retention and recruitment. The policy, which requires teachers to live within the city limits, has been a point of contention, leading to the departure of numerous competent teachers and posing challenges for new recruits. This issue is particularly concerning given the current teacher shortage in New York. The policy also appears to conflict with Governor Kathy Hochul’s Empire State Teacher Residency Program, which aims to strengthen New York’s teacher workforce. A must-read for those interested in education policy and teacher retention strategies. #EducationPolicy #TeacherRetention #NFCSD https://lnkd.in/gn96XgF6

Dual enrollment is a game changer for students, and particularly for students who do not see themselves as "college" material. The research is clear that quality dual enrollment courses are an absolute necessity! #dualenrollment #studentsuccess
“Dual enrollment has been one of the main channels through which postsecondary enrollment has expanded over the last years,” Tatiana Velasco told Inside Higher Ed in a new article on partnerships between high schools and community colleges: https://lnkd.in/euYS-DZU

PACE’s interim managing director Alix Gallagher: Attendance is rebounding—yet college readiness recovery remains “anemic.” Nearly half of California’s high school graduates are ineligible for UC or CSU admissions. “We need a different approach, starting at the state level.” https://lnkd.in/gQFFVkvA via CalMatters

OPINION by Jeff Rice: State education policies should be changed to allow public charter schools with flex-based hybrid programs that operate facilities for instruction to qualify for funding for facilities and after-school programs. Policies should also be changed to allow more students at traditional schools to take part in flexible independent study programs so that they too can benefit from a more tailored and adaptable education program.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) have seen significant positive outcomes in their implementation of #restorativepractices #restorativejustice What we at CSC found compelling: - The positive outcomes were NOT because of “mechanical” changes, like a simple change to their discipline response or code of conduct. The robust use of Restorative Practices was the driver of positive outcomes. - Equally important, the reduction in suspensions did NOT result in increased in-school-suspension, classroom disruption, or poorer academic performance. The University of Chicago Education Lab evaluated outcomes across 239 schools within CPS starting before implementation in 2008 through the end of 2018. What they found: - 18% decrease in Out of School Suspensions without an increase in the use of In School Suspensions - 35% reduction in student arrests in school - 15% reduction in student arrests outside of school - Improvement in student-reported perceptions of school climate, including items related to classroom behavior of peers, psychological sense of school membership, student-teacher trust, and school safety. - Students enrolled in RP adopting schools are less likely to exit the CPS system You can read more about their successes here: https://lnkd.in/e7MF7X4w Does your team want to explore adopting RP at your district or school? We're happy to meet with your leadership team to provide a brief overview of RP. Or, join the Hour Huddle on Friday April 5th at 12pm ET to get an overview of RP.
