Some of you aren't old enough to remember this, but it's true: Flights used to be half-empty. When September rolls around each year and we get retrospective stories about 9/11, one of the most bizarre tidbits is that the United 93 flight had 44 passengers and crew despite the plane having capacity for somewhere above 200. It really used to be like that. I have flown more than the average person over the last decade. I'm not a weekly flyer or anything like that - but I have probably flown 8-10x/year over that time when you average it out. Yesterday was the first time that I can remember being on a flight that was less than about 90% full. There are occasional empty seats, and once in a while there'll be an empty row in the back, but yesterday there were 6-7 empty rows and a few partially empty rows on our Frontier flight. My friends...it was a dream. It meant that my 14-month old could slam the armrests up and down - with the purest delight - and we didn't worry about the ruckus because there was no one around. It meant that she could fuss - even though she didn't! - without us having the noisiest kid. It meant that we could spread out and put her on the seat between us instead of trying to keep someone who's as active as a rabid weasel on our laps. As an added bonus, we've kind of grown to expect the staff on the low-cost carriers to be unpleasant (lots of flying means lots of observations) and they were all super pleasant and lovely. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you're going to be on my next flight, can you please no-show so there's more space for us to toddle around? Thanks in advance. #airtravel

Interesting read on flight optimization, with a focus on low-cost airlines. According to the article, it seems that long-haul flights have a higher profit margin, making them the most desirable flights to keep.
