It takes ideas and turns them into real ways to help with difficult matters in many areas. Using sophisticated methods and clever ideas, scientists find new things and invent ways to grow that help us all and make life easier. This year, the Strategic Council for Research Excellence, Integrity, and Trust published survey data about the public’s trust in science. About 27% of US adults distrust scientists, and trust seems to decrease. However, before we freak out, here’s what interests us: - How can we understand the root causes of scientific distrust? - How can we improve science trust? - Is science really and specifically under attack? What do the data say? In my latest post, I highlight the vagueness behind much of the critique against or for science and how different people can perceive science-related information differently. In other words, isolated critiques don’t work as reliable trust indicators and don’t help us pinpoint the issues. I argue that scientists and science communicators should honestly, critically, and clearly discuss all aspects of the state of science to improve science literacy, engagement, and trust. As a starting point, we can critically address three recurring science factors contributing to science trust. About 27% of US adults have limited confidence in scientists, and the trust has decreased in the past 8 years. But this message, like other science-related messages, may insufficiently describe the actual state of science trust. Even after years in science and science communication, I still find the discussions around science and society puzzling. Words and arguments have different meanings depending on the perceiver, requiring more clarity and honesty from scientists and science communicators. What can we say about public trust in science, and how can we improve it?
