Taking care of baseball players is one of my passions. This is a niche practice that involves managing expectations for the players, coaches, parents and even agents. In addition there are so many considerations that go into the right treatment options, many of which only apply to these players and the torque placed on the arm during throwing. I frequently get second opinions regarding both shoulder and elbow injuries in baseball players. Yesterday we completed a successful UCL repair with an internal brace on a young baseball player from Taiwan. By offering my online second opinion we reviewed his images, previous treatment and saved him from a full UCL reconstruction in Taiwan as he had a very repairable UCL injury. After my online evaluation his family made the long flight out here for a successful Arthrex UCL repair with internal brace to help him get back to baseball faster than traditional UCL reconstruction.  My office team did a great job of coordinating his care and despite the jet lag he was in good spirits with a successful surgery! Orthopedic Specialists of Seattle we continue to offer cutting edge care to the surrounding Seattle area and beyond. Adhering to pitch count recommendations for youth pitchers should be common sense. 1. Approximately 38% of Little League World Series pitchers between 2001 and 2009 had a documented pitch count excess. 2. This is data from a well-regulated national tournament. Imagine what the data would be for your average weekend home leagues that are not regulated to this level. 3. Avoid specializing a player to solely pitching. Data proves playing multiple positions may be protective against injury. It’s simple math. If a pitcher throws more often, especially when fatigued and forced to throw multiple days in a row, there is a higher likelihood of future injury.
