Temperature-shock testing is a useful method for identifying potential failure mechanisms in a product, especially when used alongside post-mortem product analysis. Here, we show optical microscopy images of two cross-sections, made exactly through solder joints. Cracks running through the solder joint are well recognizable. This indicates that the solder joints are the weakest link that will reduce the products lifespan. The outcome can be used to optimize its design and related processing.
