One of the myths of sport psychology work is that through doing the work you will get rid of all your negative thoughts and emotions. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case, as much as we would all like it to be!! This is something I always keen to highlight to people before they step on to the Mentally Skilled Athlete Programme. We can’t remove negative and unhelpful thoughts and emotions. They will always be there in some way. There is unfortunately no way to remove these negative thoughts and emotions. Well, there is one way. You could be dead. I don’t think many of us would sign up for that option. What can do is begin to understand them and begin to improve our relationship with them. We can begin to lower their noisiness and make helpful thoughts and emotions noisier. When we accept that they will be there, that is the first step towards becoming a Mentally Skilled Athlete. Because in doing so we start taking action. We don’t keep waiting for something that isn’t going to happen, such as no unhelpful thoughts or emotions, before we perform. We recognise we can perform, even if these are present. They do not have to dictate everything we do. We can also develop our own helpful thoughts and emotions and support our own performance. Mentally Skilled Athletes have clarity in what they want to do, so these unhelpful thoughts and emotion don’t cloud their judgement. They know what they are capable of and what they want to execute, and clarity supports them with this throughout their performance. I am hoping to open up the Mentally Skilled Athlete Programme again before the end of the year. You can join the waitlist to be the first to know when there is availability for the Mentally Skilled Athlete Programme by messaging me "MINDSET" #SportPsychology #MentalSkills #Mindset #PerformancePsychology #Myths

One of my favorite sport psychology skills to utilize is mental imagery. Mental imagery is the practice of using vivid, sensory-rich visualizations to simulate and rehearse experiences (like a marathon!) to enhance your performance and prepare for the competition. Here are some tips on how you can do it: 🏃♂️Detail the Route: Imagine running the actual course. Visualize each landmark, the crowd's cheers, and the atmosphere. You might not want to lay down and visualize the actual length of the marathon.. But try to imagine yourself running at your current race speed to make it as realistic as possible. 🏃♂️Overcome Challenges: Envision yourself tackling tough parts of the race. See yourself pushing through fatigue and staying strong. It builds resilience to watch yourself push through challenges. But make sure not to imagine yourself failing! This is your visualization - you have control over the outcome, so you want to practice achieving your goals! 🏃♂️Perfect Your Form: Mentally rehearse your running technique. Visualize a smooth, efficient stride and steady breathing. This actually trains your body as if you were really running, so that you’re more likely to have good form the next time you train or race. 🏃♂️Visualize Success: Picture yourself achieving your goal, whether it's a specific time or simply finishing. Picture yourself crossing the finish. Feel the adrenaline and excitement. Picture the smile on your face. Hear the crowd cheering. Remember, mental training is just as important as physical training! #ChicagoMarathon2024 #MentalImagery #MarathonTraining #SportPsychology #VisualizeSucess #healthintandem

They all have this one secret habit in common. - it makes them more likely to achieve their goals - they can out think & out perform 99% of people - it creates consistent belief, confidence & mental strength The habit: visualisation It was first applied in sports at the 1984 Olympics Now it’s one of the most effective mental training tools to rewire the brain. In 2020 Simone Biles dropped out of the Olympics for mental health and stress. 4 years later: She is back and just won the US gymnastic championships. This is no coincidence. In Tokyo, Simone quickly realised that she needed to take some time out. She was labelled as ‘weak’, ‘not a real athlete’ and a ‘failure’ for doing this. But really, she has shown incredible strength. For the last 4 years she has been: - Getting coaching and therapy weekly - Practicing visualisation and meditation - Taking rest and recharging And thats why: - She can handle the pressure better - She has more confidence than ever - She is performing the best she ever has ‘My mind is now as strong as my body. And that makes me unstoppable’ She’s not just back, She’s better than ever before. Every single one of us can learn a lesson from this.
