My Journey from the Ground to Impact Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) isn’t just a corporate obligation; it’s a powerful force for driving meaningful change. Over the past 7 years, my journey in the development sector—particularly in dairy and agriculture—has given me a front-row seat to the challenges faced by farmers and grassroots organizations. Working with Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) and NGOs, I’ve seen the struggles on the ground—the lack of resources, the pressure to meet donor expectations, and the resilience required to sustain livelihoods. These experiences have profoundly shaped my understanding of what true impact looks like. It’s not just about compliance or ticking boxes; it’s about creating sustainable, long-term change. This is why I transitioned to the CSR. I wanted to support NGOs and FPCs in a way that allows them to focus on real impact, without being weighed down by unrealistic expectations. I’ve learned that real change takes time, especially when it involves shifting mindsets and behaviors. Whether it’s empowering women entrepreneurs in rural areas or implementing sustainable farming practices, the key is in co-creating programs that address the unique challenges of each community. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work has been fostering a culture where it’s okay to not achieve 100% success immediately. By being transparent about challenges and open to discussing them, we can find innovative solutions together and drive lasting impact. CSR, when done right, is about more than just corporate responsibility—it’s about being a catalyst for positive change in the world. It’s about aligning business goals with social good, and ensuring that the communities we touch are left better off. ✍ This #TuesdayThought comes from my reflections on several conversations about scaling up #innovations with my colleagues at the Sustainable WASH Innovation Hub over the past few weeks. The main piece is about why we should care about scaling not just the NEW, but the GOOD? 📈 Scaling in business means enabling and supporting #growth. It means having the ability to grow without being hindered and requires very complex conditions, including having the right stakeholders involved at the right time and with the right approach. 🌊 Things get even more complex in the #WASH #innovation arena. Scaling is not just about growth or expansion, it is about #tackling the root causes of problems and bringing lasting #change at a systemic level. And that has an #impact on the lives of millions of #people. 🔎 So what innovations do we need to scale up in WASH to achieve such #change? My colleagues at UNICEF's Sustainable WASH Innovation Hub have an answer - we need to scale proven solutions - things that are GOOD, not just new. New things, trends and innovative solutions emerge every day, but to achieve the goals of #SDG6, we need tested and successful solutions that are scalable across regions and contexts in an accelerated way. Robust partnerships needed to achieve clean cooking goals: Niël Terblanché Cooking on fires fueled by wood or animal dung has severe health, environmental, and gender equality implications, leading to approximately 600,000 premature deaths annually, mostly among women and children around the world. The Minister of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform, Calle Schlettwein, stressed an urgent need for robust partnerships with industrialised countries, multinational companies, and the global private sector to finance clean cooking initiatives across Africa. Schlettwien spoke at the Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa, which is currently underway in Paris. He pointed to the financial constraints that have impeded Namibia and many other African countries from achieving their clean cooking targets. The summit, co-hosted by the International Energy Agency (IEA), aims to make 2024 a pivotal year for clean cooking access in Africa. Global leaders from government, the private sector, and civil society are gathered to discuss how to catalyse multi-stakeholder partnerships to address this critical issue. The IEA estimates that nearly four in five Africans still rely on open fires and traditional stoves, which use polluting fuels like wood, charcoal, and animal dung. The IEA found that this practice has severe health, environmental, and gender equality implications, leading to approximately 600,000 premature deaths annually, mostly among women and children. Schlettwein, in his address, stressed the necessity of reviewing financial systems down to the household level to make clean cooking accessible by 2030. He said that African economies, already overburdened by debt, require significant financial support to tackle the clean cooking challenge effectively. The IEA has identified clean cooking as a crucial component of the broader energy access agenda, noting that achieving universal clean cooking access in Africa by 2030 would require about N$73.6 billion in capital investments annually. The summit has brought together high-profile figures, including the African Development Bank’s President, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who are co-chairing the event alongside IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. The African Development Bank views the collaborative effort as highlighting the significance of global commitment and investment in transforming Africa’s cooking practices, as one of the most consequential investments in the continent’s future. Schlettwein, in his address, also said that clean cooking is not just an energy issue; it intersects with global development, environmental sustainability, health, and gender equality.
