Black men have faced unique and systemic barriers in reaching leadership roles and being viewed as integral to corporate leadership. Though these challenges extend to other marginalized groups, let’s take a moment to focus on Black men. The Brotherhood was created to address this gap head-on. By providing Black men mentorship, resources, and guidance, Ogilvy has helped shape a new generation of leaders who bring fresh perspectives valuable to our business and essential to shaping a more inclusive culture. This program has impacted the career trajectory of countless individuals and has significantly enriched our organization’s culture and outcomes backed by data. One thing that has stayed with me since launching the Brotherhood last year is the recurring call from participants—leaders, clients, managers—for us to do more. One manager asked for practical steps to support underrepresented groups in teams and across the business. Here’s where I always like to remind people: Black men aren’t a monolith. Take time to truly understand each person, find what motivates them, and learn what helps them thrive. At the graduation, we invited Dr. Raphael Sofoluke CEO of UK Black Business Show to tell us about his experience, he shared a powerful example of how people often made assumptions about his capabilities because he didn’t act or sound like what they were “comfortable” with. This is a constant reminder of how branding is placed on people before they’re given the chance to create their own identity. Stop this! Our lived experiences, our differences, our uniqueness—this is what builds the inclusive culture brands want but often struggle to embrace fully. Welcome the voices of those who might not always speak up, and ask for their input because you value their perspectives. If you’re unsure about how to give feedback, ask: “How do you like to receive feedback? How do you like to be praised? How can I tell when you’re stressed, and what can I do in those moments?” These questions build trust and foster psychological safety, creating a space where success isn’t awarded only to the loudest voices in the room. One leader noted, “This program reminds me that while the industry has progressed, it hasn’t progressed enough—and intentionality is key.” The Brotherhood brings that intention with innovative frameworks and modules that make a difference. To the men of the Brotherhood: thank you for being vulnerable and for trusting this program. To VML, our partner on the UK cohort—thank you. To the Coaches of Colour who saw our vision and said yes: thank you for seeing our ambitions. Derek A. and Tashan Nicholas, thank you for leading these men through an intensive three months. Matt Foster🇵🇭🇬🇧🏳️🌈 and Sufia Sheikh-Hussain, your empathy and care guide everything you touch, and I’m so grateful for your leadership. And finally, to our executive team, thank you for continuously pushing for industry firsts and knowing these won’t be the last.
"I laugh and I joke and I say, you know, this shouldn't have been the first, right? But one of the upsides to being kind of fearless leaders👑 is it's okay to be the first," says Tope Ajala, Global Head of DEI, Ogilvy. Ogilvy, along with partners VML and Coaches of Colour, launched, for the first time in UK, The Brotherhood Programme🤝. The programme is aimed at tackling the absence of dedicated leadership development initiatives specifically tailored for Black professionals. The programme also saw collaboration with Ogilvy’s clients like EY. 🔑Takeaway from today’s panel: Remote Workers Have you ever been a remote worker in a hybrid setting, with your virtual hand awkwardly raised for what feels like forever? 😅 Yep, I’ve been there, and I am hybrid! This often happens unintentionally with those in person and can lead to feelings of exclusion. Data shows that remote workers frequently feel isolated from their team's culture. One of the panelists shared a valuable tip: 💡in hybrid meetings, always start with the remote participants when doing introductions, check-ins, and soliciting feedback. This practice can help promote a more inclusive environment. #DiversityMBA #Inclusion
