Results of the osteological analysis of medieval and post-medieval Dutch skeletons challenge established preconceptions surrounding early tobacco usage in the Netherlands (Casna et al. 2024). Researchers studied both dental pipe notches (abrasions caused by regular tooth clenching around clay pipes) and lingual (inside surface) tooth stains to ascertain whether tobacco was routinely consumed before its popularisation in the early 17th century. Numerous individuals analysed from the Medieval coastal settlement of Oude Markt, Vlissingen (AD 1300-1590), were found to exhibit tobacco-associated tooth staining, but lack pipe notches, so were therefore exploiting alternative methods of consumption such as chewing, well before tobacco’s mainstream popularisation. Casna et al. (2024) also discovered that tobacco usage was virtually as prevalent amongst female individuals as in males- a rather scandalous finding considering that female smokers were viewed quite contemptuously in historical literature. A fascinating, yet relatively brief read- well worth it.
