On empathy vs compassion The differentiation between empathy and compassion is arbitrary. On many websites, it is claimed that compassion is sort of the desire to take action to help someone, whereas empathy supposedly is more akin to an awareness of another‘s suffering. It‘s not the case at all. The root meaning of compassion is „to suffer with“, and the root meaning of empathy is „to feel with“. They are one and the same, also in their historical usage. Compassion was never about activity, or doing something. The differentiation of today is based on the projections of some people. And it is important because actions to help another never require compassion or empathy, just motivation. Empathy and compassion don‘t drive to action, they open up a person‘s being for what is alive in another.
I've always been a fan of professionalism, often striving to meet the highest standards and deliver outstanding results. I sometimes ignored the human side in my pursuit, thinking it might compromise my professional image. However, I've realized that embracing our humanity is essential to true professionalism. As I reflect on my journey, a few key insights stand out: 💼 Compassion in Professionalism: It's about more than just following policies. Showing kindness and understanding the human side of our colleagues and clients builds trust and strengthens relationships. 👂 Active Listening: Genuinely listening to others fosters respect and collaboration, enhancing our professional interactions. 🌱 Growth and Learning: Acknowledging our mistakes and showing vulnerability promotes continuous improvement and mutual support. 🤝 Support and Encouragement: Offering a helping hand and celebrating each other's successes create a positive and impactful work environment. In our pursuit of excellence, let’s not forget the value of authenticity and empathy. 🌟 Balancing Roles: We wear many hats — professionals, friends, spouses, children, and many more. Balancing these roles with grace is a testament to our resilience and adaptability. Recognizing and respecting these facets in ourselves and others is key to a harmonious workplace. Professionalism and humanity complement each other beautifully 🙌 Illustration by Pejman Milani #professionalism #workplaceculture #leadership

Friendly behavior in a professional context doesn’t necessarily mean treating someone as a friend. It’s simply an approach to help others feel comfortable and improve communication. The word 'too' can often have a subtly negative impact; being 'too' friendly, for instance, may not always be appropriate. It's important to avoid extremes of 'too' in any behavior.

A message to every colleague at work: Do not compete with your colleague in a reprehensible competition. You must mature and know that your life is different from his, as are your circumstances, abilities, thinking, ambition, and skills. There is no need for comparison. Your colleague's success does not mean your failure, and your success does not mean your colleague's failure. Rather, these are written provisions. Do not hate or envy, and always make your colleague's success happy and push you to compete positively to succeed. If he falls, take his hand and help him, because the summit is wide enough for everyone, and we must all be cooperative in our work environment, elevate ourselves, and create the culture of the place.
