HARLEY-DAVIDSON'S ROAD TO NOWHERE This is going to be one of the shortest posts I've ever written. Why? Because the Harley-Davidson Motor Company (HD) has made so many mistakes over the last decade (like hiring Jochen Zeitz as CEO) that turning around the company will be a herculean task. In my opinion, HD must do the following in order to survive: Sell the company to Polaris Inc. Polaris owns the Indian Motorcycle Company. Adding HD is a great fit for Polaris. Polaris CEO Mike Speetzen should pursue the acquisition. If Polaris acquires HD, Mike should be the CEO over the combined companies, or he should hire a new CEO for HD. HD needs to add excitement to the brand. I strongly advise naming Jake Gyllenhaal and Gina Carano as spokespersons for the company and ambassadors for the brand. #retail #management #strategy https://lnkd.in/gyZ2VKGB

I noticed the following John Lewis advert on TV last night and it looks like they are looking to rejuvenate the 'Never knowingly undersold' strapline/brand positioning ahead of its 100th anniversary next year. I thought they had retired the concept a couple of years ago, so this is an interesting move but one that will give them something to really leverage in the super-competitive retail sector. Here's why: The marketing team at this Chevrolet dealership in upstate NY has started a tiktok series called "the dealership" - inspired by one of the most iconic TV shows of all time, The Office. Not only is it just hilarious, but the execution of strategy is phenomenal. In digital marketing, we talk about the power of brand awareness constantly. But what does that look like in practice? What does that look like when it's done well? Mohawk Chevrolet is a perfect example. The marketing team focused on what their audience wants and what would reach new viewers- something relatable, funny, and shareable. Office humor is a consistent thread between each generation, because it takes a shared (sometimes mundane) experience and makes it light, funny, and relatable. Not another car commercial. Many people are talking about two very different car commercials right now. Shoutout to the linked network for putting them on my radar—they offer powerful lessons for leaders and storytellers alike. First up: Jaguar. Their tagline, "Copy Nothing," is bold and ambitious. They certainly broke the mold, sparking conversations everywhere. So, they can claim a kind of win... the Rolling Stones famously said, "Any press is good press,"— but good press is ALWAYS better than bad press. And much of the chatter isn’t strictly positive. It's bold but misses something crucial: a deeper connection with its audience. It's not a masterpiece of storytelling. ---- Now, contrast that with Volvo. "Stodgy old Volvo" stepped up with an ad that’s MUCH longer, less flashy, but profoundly human. It speaks directly to the heart of what their customers value most. I won’t spoil it, but as a parent of an 2-year-old, it resonated. This comment says it all: “I just willingly sat through a nearly four-minute commercial and felt perfectly fine with it.
