F-35/F-15 Test Pilot Tucker Hamilton (cincohamilton) provides insightful commentary on a unique F-35 test procedure: "This system was never meant to be employed airborne. However, to create loads required to test system fully, our teams had to employ the drag chute airborne."The drag chute system, designed specifically for F-35A variants operated by Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Belgium, is primarily intended for use during landing on short, icy runways. Normally, the pilot activates the system after touchdown by flipping a switch on the instrument panel, which deploys a Kevlar parachute from a pod housed between the vertical stabilizers. By deploying the chute in flight, engineers could subject the system to more extreme forces than those experienced during a typical landing, ensuring its reliability under various conditions. Understanding Aircraft Roll and What Fighter Pilots Experience In aviation, the roll is one of the fundamental maneuvers that every aircraft must master. Roll refers to the rotation of an aircraft around its longitudinal axis, which runs from the nose to the tail.
