You can improve your marriage by setting boundaries with your in-laws VERY EARLY! Lack of boundaries leads to lack of respect. Boundaries must be fair, understood, clear and agreed upon between you and your spouse. Boundaries are good for the couples mental and physical health. Boundaries also benefit children. Growing up in a happy family protects them from emotional and social disorders. When setting boundaries with the in-laws stay united. These are some of the principles I wish someone told me. Had I known these things maybe I would have done one or two things differently. My aim is to keep the upcoming couples informed of the possible challenges and how these challenges can be mitigated or avoided.

Talk to your children. Do your best to validate their feelings. The more judgement you express the less they will share. Create a authentic conversation with your children. Become more interested in their day to day doings. Ask more open-ended questions. Try not to internalize their resistance. 💛 What do you talk about in therapy? A lot of people won’t got to a therapist because they are unsure what they would talk about. Or you may go and feel pressure to make the most out of the session that you can’t think of a single thing to actually say. Opening up is tough, and it may not come easily, especially when just getting to know your therapist. Here are a few things that could get you started: Relationships - not just your partner, all relationships, friends, family, co-workers Small issues - hopes, dreams, fears, disappointments, hurts, shame, conversations with your mum Present Feelings - you may just need someone to allow you the space to just vent. Life Transitions - childbirth, marriage, relocation, this can ignite untapped areas in your life that you need help understanding. Sometimes you find just starting makes opening up easier over time.

This is such a beautiful post and contains a really pertinent message: we don't have to be in crisis to come to therapy. As a couples therapist working with both heterosexual and same sex couples, there are so many recurring themes where working with a professional can help: ➡️ communication ➡️ family issues ➡️ cultural challenges ➡️ work stress ➡️ moving house ➡️ intimacy issues We invest in so many aspects of our individual lives, but often neglect our relationships. It can genuinely be life changing to make some space to focus on our relationships. As Esther Perel asserts: the quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives.

My husband and I have spent the last year going to regular therapy sessions to work on us. Before therapy, I was quite hesitant about whether we really needed it or whether it was worth the investment and it took it getting to quite a bad place for us to finally commit. But therapy gave us the headspace to reflect on our relationship, talk through some of the challenges and find a way forward. Without therapy, we almost certainly wouldn’t still be together. It was exactly what we needed. Now, we still have monthly sessions but also practice healthy habits by having 'State of the Union' meetings once a week to talk about what's gone well or not so well in the last week and how we can be better going forward. It keeps our relationship on track and allows us to address niggles before they become problems. I think that I’m probably not alone in experiencing relationship issues or going to therapy but I hate that therapy has been painted with such a negative brush. If you’re going to therapy, something must be very wrong. More people need to talk about their experiences so we can break down this stigma as working on ourselves and our relationships is HOW we prevent them from becoming very wrong and should be celebrated and embraced. So for anyone thinking about couples or marriage therapy, I’m here to tell you that it’s a massive game changer. #mentalhealth #relationships #selfimprovement
