I’ve seen a lot of people posting about reflecting on their year and congrats to all of them that have absolutely smashed it this year. But when I reflect on my year, I’ve found it’s hard enough when you have a product or a tech based company, but when I look at what I want to achieve which is a big ask and how a big problem it is with social housing at the moment in England, it is very hard to get any traction going. So next year my goal is simple, to get my application sorted to become a RP for social housing and then start making an impact on people’s lives. #socialhousing #impactingpeopleslives

Hey everyone! If you’ve heard me talk about intergenerational living ALL of this week, you know I’m a big fan. 💙 These communities bring people of all ages together to live and support each other—and they’re an antidote to loneliness and housing woes. But how do we get more of them? Here are four ways the new "Blueprint for Intergenerational Living" says we can make it happen: 1️⃣ Show the evidence: Prove that these communities benefit health and happiness—especially for older adults. 2️⃣ Raise awareness: Get the word out! Many people don’t know this housing option even exists. 3️⃣ Align policies and funding: Create programs that make it easier to build and sustain these communities. 4️⃣ Learn from the pros: Tap into lessons from existing communities on financing, operations, and design. Let’s get talking about this amazing housing alternative. The more we share, the more we can support options that help us all thrive at every age. 🌟 #IntergenerationalLiving #HousingThatWorks #SeniorsMatter #CommunityMatters #MargieYohn

A lot of interesting ideas at the #HousingCommunitySummit on day one. My personal highlights: 1. Health and housing - how one housing association have used 'community champions,' people with lived experience and are intimately connected to the issues an initiative is targeting. It was great to hear how roles had been created that took long-term unemployed customers and made them effective paid organisers, a model that can be replicated across almost any issue, providing that you stick to the key criteria when recruiting them: a. they live in the target area; b. they've experienced the target challenge; c. they've faced adversity; and d. they've demonstrated resilience. Our customers are always going to be able to solve their community's problems better than us, so why not just pay them to do it? 2. Small providers - how around 20 small housing providers in the North of England have faced up to the resource, expertise, and buying power challenges they face by increasing collaboration, rather than buckling to the pressure to merge which distracts from customer priorities in the short to medium term, erodes place, and makes our customers nothing but a number as providers get larger and larger. By collaborating, based on trust, with other providers, we can use our back-office resources more effectively, gain more leverage, and maintain the local identity, grassroots knowledge, and sovereignty of smaller place-based providers. Looking forward to day two.

Heard of Inclusive Housing for Neurodivergents? When I think about inclusive housing, I imagine more than just a roof over our heads. It’s about creating spaces where neurodivergent individuals and their families feel safe, respected, and supported. It’s about community, not just walls. Here’s what it means to me: 👉 Safety Comes First For many neurodivergent individuals, safety means more than physical security. It means homes designed with sensory needs in mind, quiet spaces, safe layouts, and environments that reduce overwhelm. 👉 Accessibility for Everyone Inclusive housing means accessibility on all levels, not just for mobility but for communication, sensory needs, and daily living. Think technology to help with routines, easy navigation, and spaces that adapt to individual needs. 👉 Community Connection We all want to belong. For neurodivergent families, this means neighbors who understand and respect differences, and communities that offer resources and support without judgment. 👉 Affordability and Availability Let’s be honest—finding housing that meets these needs and fits within a budget is often an uphill battle. Inclusive housing needs to be affordable, with systems in place to make sure no family is left behind. As a mom to a level 2 autistic child, I often wonder about the future. - Will she have a place to call her own where she feels secure and understood? - Will housing systems evolve to include the needs of people like her? Housing isn’t just about shelter—it’s about independence, dignity, and thriving. Without inclusive housing, so many neurodivergent individuals are left without options. That’s why this issue hits so close to home (literally!). Inclusive housing isn’t just a dream, it’s a necessity. And together, we can push for systems that work for everyone. What does inclusive housing mean to you? The comment section is the real vibe😅 👇 👇 #InclusiveHousing #Neurodiversity #CommunitySupport #AutismAdvocacy #NeurodivergentFamilies

Appreciate that more and more people are recognizing the importance of multigenerational living (see the Stanford Social Innovation Review article below). And while there’s lots of need and benefits, obstacles remain to meaningfully shifting our housing infrastructure to accommodate multigenerational living at scale. But there are some overlooked opportunities that are actionable immediately. In 2011, for Shelterforce magazine, I described the use of housing choice vouchers on a “cohort” basis, that could enable cohorts of related or even close non-familial households, with whomever we find and provide social support, to choose to live together or in close proximity. Link to my article from 2011 in first comment below. Anyone interested in designing a pilot?
