WE ARE BACK WITH ANOTHER TIP THURSDAYS!!!!!!!! The foundation is one of the most crucial parts of new construction. Not only does it dictate the layout and footprint of your house, but it also provides level support for all other building materials. You have four main options for your foundation type: Basement Crawl space Pier and beam Concrete slab The foundation you choose will determine how your utilities run through your home, whether or not you have an underhome area for storage or added living space, and even the energy efficiency of your house. Generally speaking, slab foundations are more common in warmer climates where the foundation doesn’t need to sit below a frost line, but you will have options in many cases. Speak with your builder about the pros and cons of each, and which foundation will serve your project best. #TipThursdays #OneGuaranteedWay Andrew Krush Luis Hernandez

One way you can soundproof your hardwood floors is by installing the flooring with a resilient underlayment and damping compound. The resilient underlayment separates the construction materials, and the damping compound helps to further disperse sound energy. The damping compound is especially important when dealing with lower frequencies that an underlayment can’t absorb.

Quality installers don't have bad days like this. Research the installation firm before you entrust thousands of dollars worth of materials and precious renovation time to an unknown installer just because the price is low. Instead of cheapest price, think best value. Ask for length of time in business, testimonials and recommendations. When finishing floor coverings against rigid obstructions such as exposed foundation rock (as in this case), expansion gaps are required. Where it is not practical or possible to undercut an obstruction (to hide the expansion gap), clean, consistent cuts should be made leaving the recommended gap between end of flooring and the obstruction. www.nfca.ca #flooring #installation #hardwood #construction #renovation

Shitterton, Dorset. Is this the longest thatched cob wall in the UK? Shitterton is a hamlet in the village of Bere Regis. Shitterton is reputed to be the oldest part of the village and is split by the Bere stream, one of our internationally important chalk streams. Bere Regis is located at the point where the sands, gravels and clay of Poole Harbour meet the chalk Downland of North Dorset. Architecturally, many of the buildings locally are made of a wide variety of materials. In Shitterton many of the buildings are made of cob and sit under thatch. Up in the main part of the village they are predominantly of brick and not far away in Winterborne Kingston there are many made of flint. Cob is a material that is made of the local soil which in Bere includes sand and clay, a perfect mix. This soil is mixed with materials such as straw, water and sometimes lime. Cob can only hold so much moisture so it’s important to protect cob walls from water. In Shitterton there are examples of cob walls that are thatched and examples that are tile roofed. When used in house contsruction it is a great natural material with effective thermal properties as the walls tend to be about 60cm thick! So the thatched wall…. there are examples of cob walls around the world. Its a material that is still used in new build construction although it’s fairly labour intensive. This wall in Shitterton is reputed to the the longest thatched cob wall in the UK. Are you aware of any that might be longer?

Choosing the appropriate roof will give you peace of mind, save you money and ensure your home stands strong against the elements for years to come 🏘 🏘 Roofs have evolved over the years as new construction techniques and materials have emerged, but the truth is that pitched roofs remain the most efficient solution for ensuring maximum protection for a home 🎯 🎯 If we were to categorize roofs into two main types, they would be pitched roofs and flat roofs. What is widely accepted in the industry is that pitched roofs offer better long-term durability and are more capable of resisting weather-related issues. BUYING A PROPERTY? 🏡 Knowing its construction type—Solid Wall, Cavity Wall, or Timber Frame—can influence insulation, energy efficiency, and future renovations. The good news? You don’t always need an expert; a simple visual inspection can reveal a lot! 🔍 ✅ Solid Walls: •Look for alternating brick patterns •Often found in homes pre-1920s, these walls are thinner (~220mm). •Older Homes especially those built before the 1920s are more likely to be solid brick ✅ Cavity Walls: •Bricks laid with long sides (stretchers) only. •Spot weep holes near the base for moisture drainage. •Thicker walls (~250mm, including cavity). ✅ Timber Frames: •External cladding may have vertical gaps (perpends) for ventilation. •Hollow sounds or flexibility in walls can be a clue. •Inspect loft areas or sockets for visible timber structures.
