We strongly support the establishment of a future-facing NESO with energy demand at its heart. Debates over policy, politics, and prices have lost sight of who the system of turbines, wires, and pylons exist for. Without energy demand in the room, it is impossible to devise solutions and design markets that meet its needs. Today, we call on Government, the regulator, and ESO to start implementing the necessary changes to governance needed to make NESO a success for energy demand. Transforming a private entity into a public body with immense power and influence over the future of critical national infrastructure cannot, and should not, be underestimated. It requires a reformation, not an evolution.

DEMANDING MORE: How the National Energy System Operator can empower energy demand 💡 Today the ADE have published a report that considers 5 core questions in the establishment of the National Energy System Operator (NESO): 🔎 What is at stake? 🔎 What are NESO’s legal obligations? 🔎 How does the ESO stack up? 🔎 What conclusions can be drawn? 🔎 How do we move forward? The report finds that if NESO imports outdated practices from the ESO (Electricity System Operator) consumers will be prevented from fully benefiting from the clean energy future.    Furthermore, the report shows that current market structures are not inclusive demand side flexibility, which is a crucial component in balancing renewable generation and could save the country £14.1 billion per year by 2040. MET Group is excited to announce the development of a cutting-edge energy storage system at our Dunamenti Power Station in Százhalombatta, Hungary. This project is set to be completed by spring 2025 and will feature a total nominal power of 40 MW and a storage capacity of 80 MWh.   We are proud that 60 MWh of this capacity is co-financed by the EU through the Hungary Recovery and Resilience Facility, part of the “Installation of Network Energy Storage at Energy Market Operators” program. What a difference a decade makes in #energystorage project sizes. It really struck me when reading about the recent update of GIGA Storage's "Green Turtle" battery park in Belgium. The article was very much focusing on the selection of Sweco to design and engineer the project (congrats by the way). More as a side note, it was then also mentioned that the project "appears to have expanded in size" by an extra 100MW/400MWh. 100MW/400MWh extra. No big deal. How this has changed. When I founded Apricum's storage practice in 2014, Younicos' completion of a battery park with an astonishing 5MWh/5MW - Europe's biggest at that time - was dominating energy storage headlines for weeks (and rightfully so). It's just amazing to see how the industry has developed since then, with mere project updates today corresponding to 80 "Younicos-projects" on a MWh-basis. And with renewable energy expansion still accelerating and markets just starting to embrace storage to provide the needed flexibility, the best is certainly yet to come! 🙌 A throwback to a great last week in Munich, Germany at The smarter E Intersolar ees - electrical energy storage Europe 2024! 60+ strong Fluence team engaged in conversations around the state of battery-based energy storage and the clean energy transition in Europe and globally. Some of the takeaways: 🔋 The number of players eyeing entry into the German market continues to increase. As companies try to understand the right path to enter the German market, the need for local knowledge around permitting, grid access, market knowledge, and product choices is key to success. 🔋 The recent decline in the cost of storage has pushed more projects into the green, including in markets like the Netherlands, previously seen as less advantageous. 🔋 Lowering the risk of market entry without running into multiple roadblocks and project delays requires strong partnerships with local expertise on the development, product, and optimization side. 🔋 The market continues to accelerate without a clear framework to unlock larger system value, for example, by reducing congestion management to better utilization of grid connections. Are there emerging energy storage technologies that can help us balance our system and bring down prices? The answer is yes, and you can find out more in our new report on Novel Energy Storage Technologies, published as part of the Clean Energy Technology Observatory (#CETO) series. We explore technologies such as isothermal compressed air and thermochemical energy storage, assessing their readiness, value chains and potential market shares. Novel energy storage technologies are crucial for achieving net-zero by 2050, as they enhance the integration of renewable technologies in thermal and power grids, enabling the flexible dispatch of energy generation and consumption. Our report finds that: ·        Some technologies are ready for deployment, while for others, commercialisation is still a long way off.   ·        The EU invests in R&I, but more is needed to make these novel technologies cost-effective.   ·        Data is inadequate on current installed capacity.
