A pitch to pitch in this #NationalFosterCareMonth! Children that happen to have contact with the foster care system are a) #children and b) children equally deserving of care and support in a #family unit. Some need temporary support, others need more, but each of them in their own way contribute to the champions that partner with them. And there is something everyone can do to pitch in to the solution. In the abundance of our existence, it is a travesty that the brilliance of some children is dimmed through no fault of their own. Worst, the internalization of this neglect sometimes leads to cerebral and mental health degeneration that compounds over time. Ways to help one or more foster care children - 1. There are about 3.5 million households in LA County. About 30,000 children, plus or minus, in foster care, a fraction of them in search of adoption. Of the 3.5 million households, if you are a household that can provide a loving environment, consider learning more about adoption with an organization like Hillsides. 2. Adopting isn't the only way to help. Consider learning more about being a resource family for a foster care child that needs a temporary accommodation. 3. You can help in other ways, too. You can be part of all those success stories you see and hear about in the news! Can your work team or school sponsor a drive to gather new toiletries or coats or duffel bags that will go to an organization supporting foster care youth? Can your family or friend group commit to gathering $100 worth of pre-teen or teen related fun items (like board games, journals, gift cards) to offer a sense of normalcy during the holidays? Can you donate your hard-earned money to an organization like Hillsides toward the eventual success story of one of these children? Giving is one of the most fulfilling acts. Casey Foundation highlighted that over 50% of children in Arizona’s foster care system are in kinship placements, making AZ a top state for kinship care. Let's give our thanks to these caregivers and continue to push for policies that support their success. Key actions include reducing barriers to licensing, providing equitable financial support, and recognizing the needs of unlicensed caregivers. Hey PDX HSP Community, During this month of the colonial holiday of Thanksgiving, we are thinking about how the work of PDX HSP interrelates with calls for repair from the Indigenous Land Back movement. So for our next community event we are grateful to be hosting Jillene Joseph, enrolled member of the Gros Ventre or Aaniiih people, and board member of the Future Generations Collaborative (FGC). We are very excited that Jillene will be hosting us at and sharing about Barbie’s Village, a land back transfer of the former Laurelhurst Presbyterian Church building and the property it sits on. FGC uses the building as a community hub and is developing a tiny home village on the property for houseless Native parents with small children. 🚨 #Funding alert! If you support #Kinship Families, we would love to hear from you. 1. We're looking to understand current practice and support for #Kinship Families across England 2. We want to fund delivery of a programme, which our Practice Guide suggests is really promising: a Kinship Navigator Programme and/or therapeutic support for Kinship Carers or children in kinship care 3. We want to fund programmes that make a real difference to children (we'll fund programmes that target carers (to change outcomes for children), or children directly. 4. There are important #Race disparities in kinship care. Any programme we fund needs to demonstrate its commitment to addressing this problem, so we can make sure all kinship families get the support they need. 5.
