Economic and Social Design will get better thanks to Liz Mcfall s discussion.
Another exciting thing at Parsons School of Design - The New School this month - Good Interventions '24 Design Exhibition https://lnkd.in/eYMjxdjy. The event showcases 15 winning design projects from all around the world. They share a concern with addressing pressing and intractable contemporary issues by bringing social sciences and design thinking and practice together. The competition and exhibition were founded by Koray Caliskan and organized by the School of Design Strategies and will take place in its permanent exhibition as a portal in the Platform of Design Strategies at Parsons School of Design at The New School. I'm chuffed [Trans. flattered and delighted] to have been invited to act as discussant. This is part of a collaboration between me, Teea Palo and Addie McGowan with Koray Caliskan to learn all about using design methods to teach interdisciplinary market studies in our brand new MSc fusion course Designing Market Places and Place Markets at Edinburgh Futures Institute. You can register to watch the opening online https://lnkd.in/eyentq9d

*Repost: For me, the most enjoyable discussion so far this one.. ‘Achieving Quality through the Planning System’ Agreement from most that the output specifications and design briefs offered by the DfE do indeed offer robust, responsible, good quality education environments. On the other hand some very real questions being asked by the speakers of this particular slot about whether this design standardisation is going far enough to provide opportunity for high design quality. Experiences shared of designers being heavily restricted by the briefs provided and almost relying on the feedback from local planners to enable them to push the design agenda and ‘do the right thing’. Also discussion regarding the pace of the early feasibility process, can those parties really engage with the LAs and end users sufficiently to provide a high quality contextual response in the ‘control options’ delivered. Could a technical annex be added that focussed on ‘design’ and ‘design quality’? Will be sure to follow up on this discussion. This Saturday, October 5, in Barcelona, the next edition of the Let's Define design conference will take place, and this time, I'm not just participating, but also co-organizing it (together with the guys from Kidults and Embacy). Organizing a conference? 🤔 On the one hand, I’ve never done anything like this before, but on the other hand, I’ve spent my whole life doing new things. So when the folks asked if I wanted to bring in some speakers, I thought: ‘Why not?’ I gave it a try and absolutely enjoyed the process — so many cool and diverse people; I not only got to meet each of them, but also had some great conversations (in three different languages) and, I would say, even made friends! In the end, we’ve gathered speakers from four continents, with experience in various industries, all united by the world of design. We have a Brazilian who has lived in California for many years and manages to work on a pretty big startup while also handling a couple of her own projects. We have a Canadian, a neuroscientist by profession, who works in communications for the NBA and the Euroleague basketball. We have designers with Colombian roots, living in Europe for a long time and working worldwide. Then Spaniards with African roots, producing impressive video content for top clothing brands and rappers with multimillion audiences. And finally, there's a Russian, who has lived in Spain for a long time and runs the famous OFFF design festival. (Check them all out in the link below 👇) This diversity is no coincidence, as we’re about to discuss the intersection of cultures: Let’s Define Cross-Cultural Design. This topic is one I personally could talk about with great pleasure, and this time I’ll be doing it on stage. I’ll be moderating a panel discussion, raising questions about cultural clashes with pretty interesting guests: Tim Rodenbröker, Veronika Fazekas, Mahal De La Durantaye, and Mike Shishkin. In short, come join us, it’s going to be exciting! ✨ Tickets and schedule → https://www.letsdefine.io

Next week the British Institute of Interior Design's Inside Knowledge 2024: The BIID's Peer-to-Peer Learning Conference takes place. I love meeting our members and this event will provide a space to share experiences from all levels of membership, and counts towards your CPD points for the year! I will be chairing the Sustainability Table - one of ten tables - discussing how other designers embed sustainability in to their client work and to the way their practice is run? Do you have a fantastic sustainability success story you would love to share? Other subjects include: Fees & charging, My biggest mistake, Finding new clients - to name a few. This afternoon event, open exclusively to BIID professional level members, will offer themed tables where attendees can choose what topic they would like to discuss in a focused, professional setting. This is a unique opportunity for designers from all walks of life to get together and share their knowledge. Whether you are an employee of a large multinational company or a sole practitioner who runs your own business, an early career professional new to the industry or someone with decades of practice under your belt – you will have something to share and something to learn. #learning #cpd #sustainability #interiordesignfees #biid

AUB Online MA Interior Design students are collaborating with Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust 🌟👇 They’ll use their research skills to produce evidence-based design ideas and create spaces that blend sustainability, inclusivity, and well-being standards 💡 What are they doing? · Research: Students are delving into cutting-edge research to improve their designs. · Live Briefs: Working on live project proposals to present their innovative ideas to real clients to merge into assignments. · Client Interactions: By engaging directly with the client, they can refine their concepts based on feedback and create exciting portfolios to enhance career opportunities. The collaborative partnership grew from an essential need for master’s students to engage with real briefs provided by clients based on their course modules. The modules give students the opportunity to work with clients of their choice, using research skills, identifying materials and products selected on evidence-based research. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting collaboration! 🤩 View our courses here: https://lnkd.in/eFdu3N8k #InteriorDesign #HealthcareDesign #Collaboration

🏛𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬🌟 [𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝟑] Hello, LinkedIn Fam! 👋🏾 Ah, the holidays! Who doesn't love them, right? 😂🤸🏾♀️ But do they truly exist when you're pursuing a degree?🤔❓ During my bachelor's degree journey, especially as an architecture student, I realized holidays were more myth than reality. One holiday that stands out was in my 200-level during Architectural Design studio. Instead of relaxing, we were tasked with assignments due before the semester began. Participating in a mini jury in December made me see how much more I could achieve. Witnessing my peers' dedication sparked a shift in me, pushing me to tap into my creative outburst.🙌🏾✨ I often mention moments like this because, throughout my architectural journey, there were many times of doubt and low motivation. Yet, through self-honesty, constant reminders to stay focused, and my faith in God, I pushed through.🙏🏾✝️ Rewind to 2020—the year of online classes. Despite the challenges, it became the year I scored one of my highest GPAs: 4.80/5.00.📚🏠 Here’s what helped me: 📌 Optimized Environment: A dedicated study space kept me focused.🖥🪑 📌 Structured Scheduling: A solid routine with a calendar helped me manage time effectively.🗓⏰ 📌 Meeting Deadlines: Without peers around, deadlines became my main motivation, driving me to do my best.⏳✅ 📌 Balanced Screen Time: Cutting back on screen time was tough, but worth it.📵 These strategies continue to shape my journey. Feel free to adapt them to yours! I'm Keren Anjorin, Passionate about sharing experiences. Embracing progress and creativity? That's my forte.🎨💡 --- Enjoyed this content? Drop your thoughts in the comments and give it a thumbs-up. More insights coming your way soon!💬👍🏾 Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in advance!🎄🌟 #studentjourney #architecture #CovenantUniversitystudent #TheKerenAnjorin #Day5of5

We’re on the lookout for creatives interested in (or skilled at) creating videos that document spaces, communities, and ways of inhabiting. There’s so many exciting, groundbreaking practices that can help us budge architecture and construction towards being more sustainable, and video helps catch these ephemeral and transient moments, helping a wider public understand how things might be different. Interested in coming along? There’s tons of brilliant collaborations coming up in the LINA Architecture Programme involving video: MAXXI Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo, Fundació Mies van der Rohe, Days of Architecture / Dani arhitekture, Oslo Architecture Triennale and S AM Swiss Architecture Museum (but in audio!). Apply with an example of your practice or pitch an idea - whatever represents your skill set and way of thinking best. When applying, select 2 activities that you’re most interested in participating in (or by organisations you’d most like to collaborate with). This way, they’ll pay extra attention to your application, making for the best matchmaking outcome. And don’t forget: you don’t need to be selected among the 25 featured LINA fellows to participate in collaborations! There’s about 90 opportunities each year, and your particular voice is what matters. For more info, check out the call on the LINA website and apply until 13 May 2024. If you have extra questions: we also do Zoom FAQs! Looking forward to hearing what you have to say. Apply at www.lina.community #linacommunity #opencall #architectureopencall #fellowships #sustainablearchitecture #creativeeurope

Are you open to the unexpected? I have come to realise on design projects, there’s often an uncomfortable phase where ideas either overwhelm you, or you hit a creative block. Our instinct is usually to try to solve the problem the same way we always do, relying on familiar methods or practices. But I have found that often the best solutions come from places you’d never expect. When we embrace the idea that inspiration can come from the most unexpected sources, we often discover the breakthrough you’ve been searching for. Being open to the unexpected can lead to serendipitous outcomes. A few years ago, my team and I worked on the branding for the Storytellers exhibition. After receiving a revised brief, we were deep into our second round of concept design and feeling stuck. But then came one of those brilliant days where everything just clicked. Ideas flowed effortlessly—we found a font that perfectly connected to the Brisbane River, a central theme of the exhibition, and the concept of illustrating the stories really came to life. The unexpected part? A junior designer, working just one day a week in design while balancing a career as a chartered accountant, completely nailed it. She created a stunning illustration that everyone loved. It was her first published design job, and it was a huge success. Giving her that opportunity, and being open to all ideas and voices, completely transformed the project...and her career. If you would like to hear more I'll be exploring this topic further when I present at the M&G Qld Belonging Conference, happening from October 9-11, 2024, at the Empire Theatre in Toowoomba. We’ll be diving deep into inclusivity in museums and galleries, with keynote speakers, workshops, and masterclasses designed to spark new thinking and inspire action. #museums #belonging #inclusivityindesign #theunexpected

Reflections & Directions: Future Island-Island Strengthening the GTE Workshop (WP3) ⏩ The recent workshop was distinguished by the creativity and collaboration of the professionals in attendance, offering a rich ground for generating and refining innovative ideas. From dynamic speed chatting sessions and visualising connection networks to crafting design manifestos and thematic project briefs, attendees ignited their creative sparks and envisioned uncharted circular system solutions for Rathlin Island and beyond. 💭 The room was inspired by pitch presentations from within the designer ecosystem including the FII team, practice partners & ecosystem engineers, emerging creatives, as well as the winners & finalists from the ‘Regenerative Rathlin’ competition held in December 2023. Their insights and experiences provided valuable perspectives that enriched collaborative efforts and sparked discussions throughout the gathering. Building on the thematic design manifestos from Day 1, attendees worked in groups to develop design project briefs. By flowing between different groups and themes, everyone could contribute their unique insights, allowing for a dynamic review and adaptation process. This collaborative effort focused on themes of food, water, energy, landscapes, and materials and led to the co-creation of innovative concepts.💡 From this exercise we identified several exciting briefs for future investigation, with upcoming cross-pollination discussions to include media and communication, collaboration and networking, funding and future-proofing, research and theory, and materials and design. The briefs include: 🔸️Archiving Futures 🔸️New Life, Old Ruins 🔸️Water Story 🔸️Birds & Materials 🔸️Cross Connections Looking forward to diving into these concepts and continuing our exploration. The workshop has set a strong foundation for work package design collectives, fostering knowledge exchange through cross-disciplinary teams, and providing the freedom to collaborate and innovate with input from diverse communities and perspectives.🚀 Stay tuned as we embark on these new creative journeys! ____ Work Package 3: Organic Waste Ecosystems Underpinned by research from the Future Island-Island project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and supported by Design Council's Future Observatory. the Design Museum | Ulster University | Queen's University Belfast #Design #FutureIslandIsland #GreenTransition #GTE #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #CircularDesign #WasteEcosystems
