Key study published in JAAD: "Clinical Performance of a Noninvasive Melanoma Rule-Out Test Across Fitzpatrick Skin Types." "This study demonstrated that regardless of a patient's skin type, the DMT can augment the detection of melanoma at an early stage, while reducing the number of biopsies performed for benign lesions that mimic melanoma," said Maral Skelsey, MD, lead author and medical director of the Dermatologic Surgery Center of Washington. "The high NPV indicates that a negative result for a suspicious or equivocal pigmented lesion makes it highly unlikely to be a melanoma."

May is Melanoma Awareness Month. Join: * Anna Pare' MD - Board Certified Dermatologist * Michelle Juneau, MD - Board Certified Dermatologist * Michael Liu, MD - Board Certified Dermatologist - Mohs Micrographic Surgeon - as they cover the options available for diagnosing and treating melanoma. The primary goal of Mohs surgery is to remove all skin cancer cells while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue. Mohs surgery can be used to treat: * Basal Cell Carcinoma * Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and * Melanoma One key advantage of Mohs surgery is that patients will know their results right away. As a patient, you will not leave your appointment until all of the skin cancer in the treated area has been removed. This option provides peace of mind for our patients. @SkinCancerFoundation shares: " Mohs surgery is considered the most effective technique for treating many basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), the two most common types of skin cancer. Sometimes called Mohs micrographic surgery, the procedure is done in stages, including lab work, while the patient waits. This allows the removal of all cancerous cells for the highest cure rate while sparing healthy tissue and leaving the smallest possible scar." Mohs surgery provides the highest cure rate: Up to 99% for a skin cancer that has not been treated before Up to 94% for a skin cancer that has recurred after previous treatment Mohs surgery is the gold standard for treating many basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), including those in cosmetically and functionally important areas around the eyes, nose, lips, ears, scalp, fingers, toes or genitals. Mohs is also recommended for BCCs or SCCs that are large, aggressive or growing rapidly, that have indistinct edges, or have recurred after previous treatment. Some surgeons are also successfully using Mohs surgery on certain cases of melanoma. Have you or someone you love been diagnosed with skin cancer? The American Cancer Society estimates in 2024: * An estimated 100,640 new melanoma cases will be diagnosed. * An estimated 8,290 deaths will occur due to melanoma alone. Don't become a statistic ... call your dermatology provider today to schedule your annual skin check. Your skin will thank you! @AmericanCancerSociety @americanmelanomafoundation1996 @dermatologyconsultants @AADskin https://lnkd.in/gpw2Ey95

Skin cancer, which includes squamous cell cancer, basal cell cancer and melanoma is the most common cancer and its incidence is steadily rising. In fact, one in five people will develop skin cancer during their lifetime. Devonshire Dermatology offers comprehensive screening for skin cancer including genetic testing and counselling for patients with a strong family history of melanoma, atypical nevi, and basal cell carcinoma or squamous below the age of 30. Catch our very own Dieter Schmidt, MD, FAAD, FACMS on KIRO 7 News talking about our imaged-guided non-invasive superficial radiation therapy for non-melanoma skin cancer. Each day, 9,500+ Americans are diagnosed with #skincancer, and most rely on surgery for a cure. We are the first site in all of Washington to offer this service to our patients, and as Dr. Schmidt notes, it’s been a real game-changer for our patients! Over a series of ~20 sessions, the machine uses ultrasound and soft x-ray radiation to precisely target cancerous cells. The procedure is non-surgical and is as effective as surgery for certain types of basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers--an excellent option for patients who are either not good surgical candidates or who do not want the scarring of surgery (especially on their face). Scientists at the National Institutes of Health (#nih) have #discovered that the #presence of a #benign #nail #abnormality may lead to the #diagnosis of a #rare #inherited #disorder that increases the #risk of developing #cancerous #tumors of the #skin, #eyes, #kidneys and the #tissue that lines the #chest and #abdomen (e.g., the #mesothelium). The #condition, known as BAP1 #tumor #predisposition #syndrome, is caused by #mutations in the BAP1 #gene, which normally acts as a tumor #suppressor, among other #functions. The #findings are published in JAMA Dermatology and will be presented today at the Society for Investigative Dermatology Annual Meeting in Dallas. https://lnkd.in/eumSu8cX

Exciting New Insights in Melanoma Recurrence Detection Yesterday, I read an insightful new study published in The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology—titled ATLAS: A positive, high-yield review of patient symptoms most significantly associated with melanoma recurrence. This article presents a concise, symptom-based approach to detecting melanoma recurrence, using the mnemonic “ATLAS” (Appetite change, Tiredness, Lymph node enlargement, Abdominal pain, and Shortness of breath). I’ve already started incorporating this into the care of melanoma survivors I saw yesterday. The power of evidence-based practices in improving early detection and patient outcomes can’t be overstated. I’m looking forward to seeing how this simple yet impactful approach can continue to enhance our surveillance strategies. #Melanoma #PatientCare #EvidenceBasedMedicine #Dermatology #Oncology

Tanning bed access and usage is driving increased melanoma risk in specific regions of New England, according to a new spatial epidemiologic study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. Specifically, for every one-minute increase in average travel time to tanning facilities within a 30-minute travel time threshold, the melanoma incidence rate decreased by 3.46% in the same county and 1.92% across New England, the study showed. https://lnkd.in/d-USP69i

Melanoma skin cancer ranks as the 𝟏𝟕𝐭𝐡 most prevalent cancer worldwide, according to the World Cancer Research Fund International. Notably, the American Academy of Dermatology anticipates over 𝟐𝟎𝟎,𝟑𝟒𝟎 new cases of melanoma in 2024 alone. May holds particular significance as 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡, dedicated to educating the public about the risks associated with skin cancer and highlighting the critical importance of early detection. This month-long campaign aims to promote regular skin examinations, and encourage the adoption of protective measures such as sunscreen and protective clothing. In this regard, biopsy devices play an indispensable role in the early detection and diagnosis of skin cancer. These specialized tools enable dermatologists and oncologists to obtain tissue samples for histopathological examination, a crucial step in achieving an accurate diagnosis. The improved accuracy and efficiency of modern biopsy devices, coupled with their minimally invasive nature, have solidified their position in dermatological practices, offering precise and rapid results.
