The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is an annual international campaign that runs from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day). This campaign aims to raise awareness and mobilize people to take action to end gender-based violence, which includes physical, emotional, sexual, and economic violence directed at individuals based on their gender. The 16 days serve as a call to action to end violence in all forms and promote the rights of women, children, and vulnerable groups. Activities during this period include public education, community outreach, policy advocacy, and providing support for survivors of violence. If you're involved in activism or planning events during this time, it's a great opportunity to raise awareness and engage your community in discussions about the importance of ending gender-based violence and ensuring the safety and dignity of all individuals.

A few weeks ago, for the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls, Mercy Hands, in collaboration with Mercy Path and Iraqi Telemedicine Center, launched a campaign addressing the intersection of migration, protection, and gender. Our efforts include an online awareness campaign and capacity-building sessions for key governmental staff on national and international protection mechanisms for women and children in migration contexts. Using real-world examples, such as the arrival of Lebanese migrants in Iraq, we emphasized the urgent protection needs and measures required during emergencies. Since starting my role as Protection and Human Rights Director with Mercy Hands, my work has focused on empowering vulnerable women and girls—especially IDPs, refugees, and returnees. The 16 Days of Activism is a critical reminder that ending violence against women and girls is essential to unlocking their full potential. Ensuring their access to education, employment, and training opportunities not only benefits individuals but also strengthens societies. Violence against women and girls exacerbates inequalities and creates barriers to building sustainable and inclusive peace. Let’s work together to create a world where women and girls live free from violence and can thrive in every aspect of life. 🌍💜

Today begins the 16 Days of Activism: a time to stand up, speak out, and honour those whose voices have been silenced for far too long. Every day for the next 16 days, we raise our voices not just in protest, but in solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence. We’re not just advocating for change; we’re fighting for a world where no one lives in fear, where respect, love, and equality are a reality, not an elusive dream. Together, we can create that world. Let’s make every day count. 💜 #16DaysOfActivism #EndGenderBasedViolence #BreakTheSilence #HumanRights
