Continuity of Care - It can be fixed! 🎉 In my previous post, I wrote about how continuity of care - once a pillar of UK healthcare - has, in fact, decreased in value. Let me clarify, GPs and patients still value it, but the challenges that face the NHS today have meant that other things, such as seeing as many patients as possible, even if they’re new to you, take precedence. The shortage of GPs and increased waiting times have meant that patients are focused on just seeing someone, rather than worrying about seeing a particular doctor. But I am not one to just complain about an idea and not suggest some solutions. So, here are some first steps towards actually improve the continuity of care: We are all scientists at our core, and we know that if we want to improve anything, it has to be measured first. So our first step would be measuring continuity of care. Tracking continuity of care over time and identifying inequalities is crucial. Here's how; 1️⃣ Mixed Measures: Use continuity of care index (UPC index) from electronic health records and the GP Patient Survey for a comprehensive view. Then what? 2️⃣ Avoid Uniform Targets: Improvements should be measured from baseline continuity rather than setting uniform targets for all practices. How has this worked for ElmTree? The government’s immediate priority for health is to tackle the record waiting lists and restore NHS performance standards, as part of the mission-led approach. Solving these issues will require new approaches, ones that embrace innovation and a new way of doing things. This is something we have already seen being done in pockets, now is the time to scale and invest in embedding it.
