In recent years, U.S. healthcare providers have increasingly recognized the significant impact of menopause. More resources are being compiled and shared, and institutions are updating their curricula to include comprehensive menopause education. There’s still quite a way to go, but it’s a positive movement. Research is also providing a clearer understanding of how menopause affects eye health.  It’s a bit tricky because aging in general causes eyesight to deteriorate. Is a patient’s condition due to menopause or simply natural ocular aging? We are lucky to partner with Visana Health and to learn from Barbara Levy, MD, FACOG, FACS Visana's Chief Medical Officer, who is renown in her field. Today Dr. Levy published an article with Chrissy Farr in Second Opinion Media on why it is paramount that menopause treatment be integrated in a whole-care model. This is a key reason why Frist Cressey Ventures invested in Visana. We believe a longitudinal and whole-person model for all women ages 18-65 will produce the best outcomes and experience, and cause tangible reduction in the cost curve for payors. “A challenge for [menopause] patients is that not all symptoms are related to declining hormone levels during perimenopause or menopause. They may be experiencing thyroid problems or blood sugar fluctuations causing their symptoms. In an ideal world, the management of menopause symptoms should be integrated into the care for all other conditions a woman may suffer from. Healthcare professionals can best treat patients when they know about every treatment a woman is taking. What I see instead is the rise of companies that do not have licensed practitioners available to patients who can diagnose other medical conditions and prescribe medication and order labs. This has been a problem in my practice. There’s also been a move towards “Pill Mill” behavior, with the rise of companies creating pharmacies and selling medications directly to patients alongside supplements — all without adequate clinical support. Women deserve better. After decades of paternalism and symptoms getting ignored, we’re finally in a moment where menopause is getting real attention and resources - although I will be the first to stress that it’s only a drop in the bucket. As an industry, let’s not waste the moment.”

June is "Pelvic Organ Prolapse" awareness month. 💡 I would like to share a few insights about the Pelvic Organ Prolapse(POP). 📢 I remember the lines that I heard in a conference- "If you live in a country where women have babies, you live in a country where there is a lot of POP"- These words say indirectly about the prevalence of POP and the need for awareness about the POP. 📌AWARENESS - Awareness & Preventive measures to be taught and Practised in the Antenatal period. 📌AVOID NEGLIGENCE - Many mothers have POP symptoms But very few were identified & received the appropriate Rehab. It's always an underreported condition. POP rehab to be given more importance equal to that of Incontinence. 📌 EARLY REHAB- Many women approach for POP treatment in Menopause or Post menopause. Identifying & providing rehab earlier helps to control the occurrence and the complications. If you haven't already, I highly encourage everyone in healthcare to watch The M factor on PBS. Half our population will go through menopause, 1.1 billion women by 2025, yet there is so very little information, research or focus on it – even in our ObGyn offices. In fact, most women get their information from friends, family and social media! This is an excellent resource – as a start. Also note the information in the documentary is presented by women Obgyns, Urologists, Neuroscientists from our top health care institutions. Here are a few things I learned: -  Board-certified ObGyns get only about a month of training on menopause -  There’s very little research on women’s health and whatever research and funding exist,  is dedicated mostly to breast cancer and pregnancy -  Menopause has significant impact on brain health -  $1.8 billion is lost every year to menopause-related work absences. -  Treatments exist, but because of a poorly conducted study from 1969, there’s a lot of fear around it from both women and physicians Health care providers and leaders - how are we addressing the crisis?
