Happy to announce that I have successfully completed the EDGE V3 Technical Online Workshop (EDGE Experts training) by the Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI). The former president of the United States of America, Barack Obama once said, “We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it.” This phrase expresses the magnitude of this huge threat to the earth caused by humanity. As a construction professional, I feel responsible to act on this matter because the building and construction industry is responsible for over 34% of the world’s energy consumption. In 2021, the building and construction sector accounted for around 37% of energy and process-related CO2 emissions globally. I have created the purpose to contribute to sustainable development, which is compounded by the principle of living a life of service to humanity and my interest in accurate science. All these will fall inline with the 2015 Paris Agreement. Let's develop sustainability in the built environment by making buildings more resource efficient. See you at the top! A transition to green wastewater-treatment approaches in the U.S. that leverages the potential of carbon-financing could save a staggering $15.6 billion and just under 30 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions over 40 years. Braden Limb, Systems Engineering graduate student, is the first author on the research published in ✨Nature Communications Earth and Environment✨ in a first-of-its-kind study. “These findings draw a line in the sand that shows what the potential for adopting green approaches in this space is – both in terms of money saved and total emissions reduced. It is a starting point to understand what routes are available to us now and how financing strategies can elevate water treatment from a somewhat local issue into something that is addressed globally through market incentives," said Limb. This module deepened my understanding of integrating sustainability into infrastructure systems with a particular emphasis on advanced systems theory and methods for planning and operating infrastructure across the water, energy, transportation, agriculture, and waste management sectors. A highlight for me was exploring the intricate interconnections of the water-energy-food nexus, a critical area of interest for addressing global sustainability challenges.
