I get asked all the time for advice on how to buy businesses. Last week, we acquired lawncareplanner.com from Josh Pigford. You’re probably wondering wtf? Why would you buy that? Let me explain. I usually need multiple reasons to act on something. At the beginning of March, Josh posted a list of projects he was looking to sell, Lawn Care Planner being one of them. It was interesting to me when he first bought it and it is still interesting to me now, so I reached out to try to make a deal. I wasn’t thrilled with the numbers and likely got busy so I forgot about it. Until two weeks ago… I was at a friend's house during his wife’s baby shower. A bunch of dudes talking random nonsense while we waited to go pick up our better halves from the shower. My friend started mentioning all the work he had been doing to his lawn. - Fertilizing - Aerating - Dethatching The list goes on and on. I immediately thought about Lawn Care Planner… Next, my mind wandered to my childhood. I remembered how obsessed my father was with maintaining the grass surrounding our house. For half the year, he’d come home from his corporate job at 5 pm. We’d eat dinner as a family… And he’d immediately be outside mowing the lawn and watering it. Growing up I thought this was ridiculous and would often make fun of him. I’m pretty sure even my friends gave him shit. At times I would tell him our lawn looked better than the grass at Yankee Stadium. Are you getting it yet? For about two years now, I’ve privately discussed my desire to share more. Unfortunately, my imposter syndrome is pretty strong and so I’ve always shied away from it. Until now. The plan is to use this tiny acquisition as a launching pad for sharing more. So here are the details of the deal structure, our goals, and how we plan to approach this. We purchased the business for $10,000. 12 monthly installments at 5% APY. We effectively bought the business for $855.56. I’ve loaded up a bank account with the $10K and I’ve already scheduled the remaining 11 wires. The rules… We can’t add to the original $10,000. So at minimum, we need to monetize the site enough to cover the interest. Our goal is to start generating enough revenue to service the monthly debt obligations as quickly as possible so we can allocate the remaining capital to growth. As far as our plans for growth? That’s a post for another day. If you didn't find this helpful or interesting, feel free to skip the like, comment, and share. But if you did, I'd love to hear your thoughts and see you join the journey!

“I’m sorry I wasn’t kind to you, I didn’t understand you.” - Me to my St. Augustine grass last weekend. Last spring / summer was my first warm season of home ownership. As a lawn care novice, I removed some St. Augustine stolons at various spots across my property because, to me, they looked like viny weeds. I also cut the grass way too short in an effort to keep my lawn looking beautifully manicured. Thinking I was helping my lawn, I was actually hurting my lawn 😥 I messed up. Little did I know, St. Augustine grass is a coarse textured grass that spreads by stolons. Stolons help to create a strong, healthy lawn. And, the ideal mowing height for St. Augustine is higher than the height at which my grass was cut. Believe it or not, I actually did not even know my grass was St. Augustine until late June that season 😬 Once I learned that key piece of information 🔑 I should've started learning more about St. Augustine and its needs / requirements. In sales / #presales, how often do we rush to “help” our prospects and customers without truly understanding them? We might be doing them, and ourselves, more harm than good. In life, have you ever been unkind or judgmental to someone because you didn’t understand them? Or have you felt someone acted that way towards you? What can help you gain understanding? Research and discovery. Invest time to learn! Recently, I’ve been doing just that - lots of research and #discovery to learn how to best restore my formerly lush lawn of St. Augustine to its beauty from the actual weeds that are taking over this season. #understanding is critical to success, in life, in business, and... in lawn care.

Turf farm sells grass like never before! John was asked by Australian Lawn Concepts, one of Australia’s larger turf farms, to assist in marketing an oversupply in turf. After spending time with the owner, John was able to deduce that the major target audience for the turf product was Landscapers – as unlike home owners, they purchase turf for numerous homes at a time. John produced an innovative Direct Mail Campaign which featured an offer “too good to refuse” to most thirsty male landscapers! For every purchase of 500 square metres of turf (about one regular home’s worth), the landscaper would receive a free carton of premium Crown Lager beer! John explained “given the capacity of landscapers to order volume turf, we need to provide them with an incentive which rewarded them personally. And then we needed to link the giveaway with a particular volume, so that we would stimulate repeat purchasing and ongoing loyalty”. The Direct Mail Campaign was due to be mailed to 500 landscapers in the region, but after sending 250 of the mailers out, guess what? ALC Turf Farm ran out of turf!! Owner, John Kelleher, says “it was just remarkable and I’m now certainly a fulltime devotee of the power of wow!” If you’d like help with INCREASING SALES of your stuff, email JD at info@theinstituteofwow.com #theinstituteofwow #johndwyer #jddwyer #explodeyoursales #marketing #marketingevent #businesscoach #business #marketingcoach #websitemakeover
