The Roundhouse is proud to be partnering with UK Music Ltd on its new, first of its kind study in the UK – Full Diversity, Full Return. This study will assess the economic impact of Black music in this country and capture the unique perspectives of artists, creators, and behind-the-scenes professionals working in black British music. Black music shapes global culture, and it is essential to understand the economic value the artform brings to the UK music industry to support ongoing investment in the music and the people who deliver it. At the Roundhouse we combine our impactful youth work with unique live music, events and performing arts. We want our stage to represent every corner of London and want to present an increasingly diverse music, events and arts programme. Hearing from anyone and everyone who works with Black British music is invaluable to the success of the Full Diversity, Full Return study. You can take part in the study and share your voice by filling out this survey https://lnkd.in/gPzZQDYz

Creative industries get absolutely hammered because spaces to lease and rent are so expensive, let alone to buy. ACT Government could fund more support for creative industries if rental property investors paid commercial rates of property tax rather than private ones. Owning rental properties is a for-profit business.

Canberra should be a hub for live music, and there are steps our government could take to make that happen. A big part of the shift that’s required is a more collaborative approach where the government partners with local creative communities and venue managers to activate Canberra’s nightlife. Check out this scorecard from MusicACT and have a look at our policy pillar ‘Bringing People Together’ to learn more about what we’ve heard would shift the dial for local artists and music lovers at https://lnkd.in/gfCT4aHM

I had the pleasure this week to sit on a panel to discuss Early Music in New York, past, present, and future and I thank the Early Music Foundation and Early Music America for the privilege. I touched on several issues that still plague the field with respect to ethnic diversity and that of black and brown musicians, among other things. Yes, there are more ethnically diverse players in the field now, but there is more work to be done to make sure there is representation in the field across the board. Today I had the pleasure of attending the Black Orchestral Network 2024 Summit and, low and behold, this was also the topic of discussion with respect to managing initiatives to increase diversity in every aspect of the field of classical music. The discussion focused on how to create equitable auditions, how to build community and financial support by increasing board, donor, and staff diversity, how to identify ways in which all of us can work together to break the stigma that comes with “white fragility,” and how to find ways in which we can reach a benchmark to celebrate black creative expression in the field rather than perpetuating the idea that this should be noted as extraordinary. Chi-chi Nwanoku, Founder of Chineke!. double bassist, broadcaster, writer, and mentor, spoke about the Berlin Conference of 1884, at which European Nations discussed how to divide up the continent of Africa among them. She brought to our attention that those nations sitting at the table reaped the benefits while those African countries that were not invited might consider themselves on the menu. All that to say, we need to have more change agents at the table alongside musicians of color to make the case for a more equitable field. We also need to respect the fact that musicians of color did not choose this field to right the wrongs of discrimination but chose the field because of a passion for making music. To work efficiently toward our goal, we need to see a larger and more diverse pool of advocates involved in every aspect of our field to move the DEI initiative forward, maintain it, and retain it as a high priority. https://lnkd.in/e4m-FhpF

Sir Lucian Grainge on certain DIY platforms, Summing up his general view of low-streaming DIY music, Grainge said in October 2023 that those companies objecting to ‘artist-centric’ changes at streaming platforms were “unsurprisingly those whose business model is based on being merchants of garbage”. Virgin Music Group heads JT Myers and Nat Pastor then told MBW in Q4 last year that they had “no intention” of entering the DIY distribution arena for similar reasons. Said Myers: “Major labels used to get criticized for ‘throwing a bunch of s–t against the wall and seeing what sticks’ [as they would sign many artists and only a few would be successful]. “Well the [DIY aggregation world] casts the net even wider. It’s not why we got into the music business.” CD Baby, then, is an odd cultural fit at UMG… and buying it definitely won’t do much to increase Universal’s EBITDA margin. Yet Downtown itself saw significant value in CD Baby, paying around $200 million to acquire it via parent AVL Digital in 2019. All of which taken into account… if I were a betting man I’d wager that, should regulators approve UMG’s acquisition of Downtown next year, we’ll see Universal then look to offload CD Baby to: (a) a private equity buyer, or (b) a company proud to specialize in the world of self-uploading amateur artists. Who knows? Maybe that company could be Believe… once the small matter of UMG’s $500 million lawsuit against the French firm is done and dusted, anyway. Music Business Worldwide
