This Thanksgiving season, we’re reflecting on the immense gratitude we have for everyone tirelessly working to prepare the next generation of teachers. 🍂 During our recent visit to #edprep program partners National Louis University and Marian University Indianapolis, we had the privilege of interviewing current and aspiring teachers, mentor teachers, teacher-educators, and leaders, and seeing them channel joy and perseverance amidst the deep complexity of teaching and learning. Each conversation renewed our optimism for how diverse pathways into teaching can contribute to more effective and resilient educators. At DFI, we hold a bold vision for what it means to be a well-prepared teacher—a vision rooted in evidence and shaped by the needs of the students and communities we serve. To all the teacher-educators empowering future teachers, the mentor teachers guiding them with wisdom, the leaders advocating for better educational opportunities for all students, and the aspiring teachers stepping into this profession with purpose-driven vision: Thank you 🙌 . Your work is transforming lives and building brighter futures for students. 📹 Check out this behind-the-scenes video from our latest learning visits, where we captured the vibrant energy of our collective work in action.

I'm proud to be a graduate of American University's American University School of Education's MEd program. AU SOE is up to some really special things under the leadership of Dr. Cheryl Holcomb-McCoy! 🎯 The number one lesson I carry with me each day from this program is that policy formation, advocacy, and adoption are all critical, but the most meaningful results for students come from effective policy implementation. 👨🏫 Effective implementation requires considering stakeholders, including street-level bureaucrats like teachers, at every stage of the policy process. ✂ Effective implementation requires cutting red tape. 💰 Effective implementation requires hard work and sufficient funding. ❗ A policy is only as effective as its implementation. 🦅 If you're looking to grow your leadership and expand your impact, definitely check out this program! Go Eagles! #AmericanUniversity #AU #AUSOE #Education #Leadership #Policy
SOE Alumni Spotlight: Taylor Myers, M.Ed. The brilliant Taylor Myers is a Fall 2022 graduate of our MEd in Education Policy and Leadership (EPL) program. A native of Beallsville, Ohio, he now resides in Washington, DC. He is currently the Managing Director of State Funding and External Affairs for Teach For America. "I chose SOE's EPL program for my master's degree because of its partnership with Teach For America. That alliance signaled to me that SOE shared not only my values but also my strong desire for [all] children to have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. The MEd program allowed me to benefit from the best of multiple worlds. I learned policy formation, advocacy, and policy implementation, as well as curriculum in a safe online environment during the peak moments of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each day, I carry with me what I learned about the program's instruction on the structure for policy processes and, particularly, the protocol for an effective implementation of processes involving stakeholders. A policy is only as effective as its implementation. I am eternally grateful to have gained so much from all of my SOE professors, who were extremely smart, passionate about students, and well-connected. From their academic research and work experience to their life stories and personal networks, the ROI was incredibly strong. I proudly recommend SOE's MEd program because of its rigorous coursework, unwavering embrace of antiracism, world-class faculty and staff, flexible approach, and inspiring program participants. The program is entirely worth your time and money because of the knowledge, skills, mentors, friends, and values you gain, which far exceeds your investments." Just concluded off our first day of the FGLI Consortium Conference at Princeton University with Christina Rose, Ed.D. and Barbara Hall! Tonight's keynote featured Dr. Anthony Abraham Jack, the inaugural faculty director of the Newbury Center and associate professor of higher education leadership at Boston University. Dr. Jack is widely known for his research documenting the diversity among lower-income undergraduates and is author of "The Privileged Poor" and "Class Dismissed". Some takeaways from Dr. Jack's talk that stuck out to me, -How do we institutionalize support structures and resources for lower-income undergraduates? -What are the consequences that institutions face when ignoring the challenges lower-income students experience? Can we really say that we, the institution are fulfilling our goal of preparing ALL of our students for success post-graduation? -"Remove the individual and focus on a campus-wide cultural shift" More often than not, there is usually an individual or office working to creating and enhancing programming and resources to support students. What would happen if we had every office on campus helping out by putting something together as it applies in their respective work? Looking forward to engaging in thoughtful conversations and learning from others on how we continue to build on this work and support our students! #FGLIConsortium #FLI #firstgen #bettertogether

John Dewey, a pioneering philosopher and educator of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, profoundly influenced modern education 🌟. His progressive ideas revolutionized how we approach teaching and learning, placing a strong emphasis on experience, democracy, and active participation in the classroom 🏫. Dewey believed education should go beyond rote memorization. He championed the idea that students learn best through hands-on activities and real-world experiences 🌍👐. This approach not only engages students but also helps them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills 🧠🔍. One of Dewey's most significant contributions is his concept of "learning by doing" ✨. He argued that education should be directly connected to the lives and interests of students, making learning more meaningful and relevant 🌱. This idea has been a cornerstone of educational reform, influencing teaching methods and curricula worldwide 🌏. Dewey also stressed the importance of democracy in education. He believed that schools should be communities where students practice democracy through collaborative learning and shared decision-making 🗳️🤝. This perspective helped shape inclusive and participatory educational environments, promoting equality and respect for diverse opinions . Today, Dewey's legacy lives on in the emphasis on experiential learning, student-centered teaching, and democratic principles in classrooms everywhere 🌟. His work continues to inspire educators to create quality educational experiences that prepare students for a dynamic and interconnected world 🌐. #niqsfoundation #niqsf #ThrowbackThursday #JohnDewey #QualityEducation #EdReform

This is an insightful and well argued analysis of American K-12 education. Steven F. Wilson exposes what has derailed so many American schools: Freire, Foucault, Critical Race Theory, therapeutic culture. Wilson is not combative, just clear, rational, concerned, inspiring. He argues for a new ethics of care in education—especially in the inner cities, for venerating knowledge as that which belongs to students, and for genuine optimism about the future. The talk is truly worth your time. The talk itself takes about 22 minutes after the moderator's intro. It is followed by a roundtable discussion.

Welcome to week three and chapter 10. A new week and a new chapter in our EXPLORING PRACTITIONER RESEARCH IN FE - ADVENT COUNTDOWN! and our 12 days of chapter reveals 🌟🎄. Chapter 10 is written by Fey Cole, a Curriculum Manager in a Further/Higher Education College in Northern Ireland, explores how formal and action research has explored the benefits of the research of intergenerational and project based learning on student’s emotional well-being and educational outcomes. Fey’s research investigates the impact these two approaches have on learning outcomes and how it develops a sense of community and belonging within the FE environment. The chapter focuses on how project-based learning can connect students with their local environment and develop the skills required for adopting a sustainable and industry-led focus, and how a creative approach to delivery can build student autonomy in learning and developing positive relationships between students and educators. #ExploringPractitionerResearchFE 🤩 with Dr Kerry Scattergood and Routledge Bryony Evett Hackfort Christine Calder Dr Francine Warren Chloë Hynes Dr Rebecca Gater Rachel Arnold
