Deaf Awareness Week - Tip no. 2 Write things down. Consider alternative ways of communicating when face-to-face communication is difficult. Writing messages down or sending text messages can be a helpful way to ensure that everyone is included in the conversation. Alternatively, you can use the 'dictate' option on your phone to transcribe your speech into text. Friendly reminder to all my fellow interpreter friends out there (though I really feel like I shouldn't have to say this - yet here we are): While I'm watching you interpret, I should not be able to identify your personal opinions/views/biases. You should not be adding your own side-commentary into your interpretation; you should not be reacting to remarks with blatant facial expressions; and you ABSOLUTELY should not be modifying/omitting/skewing the message because of commentary you don't align with. And this isn't mitigated just by accepting "neutral" jobs - ANY job can turn into conversations of opinion. It is our job to render those messages faithfully and accurately - without reaction or judgement, without imposing our own opinions on others, and without omission or distortion. If you are unable to remain neutral, then you either need to take a lil vacay & come back when you're ready, or interpreting may not be the right career path for you. This job is not about us. We are here for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing communities who have fought so hard for access. Don't bring us another step back by imposing your beliefs onto your interpretations, and therefore, onto your consumers. They deserve the best, and neutrality is paramount for that.

For interpreters, confidentiality is a crucial ethical principle and obligation. It means we never know where k is, unless she appears on a stage or on TV! 🤣 Read below for some top tips when working with an interpreter.👇 ⭐️ The interpreter isn’t just there for the deaf person but also the hearing person who can’t sign ⭐️ Don’t look at the interpreter, make eye contact with the deaf person ⭐️ Don’t slow down your speech, talk at a normal pace ⭐️ Don’t ask the deaf person if they lipread, if they wanted to they wouldn’t have an interpreter present ⭐️ Talk directly to the deaf person. Don’t say to the interpreter, ‘tell them…’ ⭐️Don’t make small talk with the interpreter, they’d rather focus on interpreting!

International Pronouns Day 16 October 2024 International pronouns day occurs on the third Wednesday of October. Everyone has pronouns. Just try writing about someone without using any pronouns and you will soon find how unwieldly the English language is without pronouns. Not all pronouns refer to gender, such as, I, you, we, our... The pronouns they/them have been used in the singular since Elizabethan times. Everyone uses they/them in the singular, including those who strongly object, without realising; for example, 'someone left their umbrella on the bus, I hope they don't get wet.' We often use they/them in the singular when we do not know the gender of the person. So, why do some people find it so difficult to use they/them for nonbinary people? It is okay to ask if you are not sure about someone's pronouns. It is respectful to use someone's pronouns if shared.
