Today, we are highlighting Amaya Barrios, Assistant Manager at Magnolia Terrace for #HispanicHeritageMonth ✨What does your heritage mean to you, and how has it shaped your personal or professional life? Hispanic heritage is everything for me. It is a reflection of what my family stands for and what I believe in. It's community, pride, unity, and strength and ultimately, it’s what has led me to be the best version of myself both at home and at work. ✨What aspects of your culture are you most proud of, and how do you incorporate them into your daily life or work? Aspects of my culture that I am most proud of include family traditions, cultural traditions, resilience, creativity, and hard work. By integrating these aspects into daily personal and professional routines, I feel as though I can enrich my life and contribute positively to my environment, embracing my heritage while making meaningful impacts. ✨What advice would you give to the next generation of Hispanic professionals? Embrace your identity, pursue continuous learning, and build a strong network of mentors, peers, and industry leaders. Always seek out and create opportunities to learn and grow - do not wait for opportunities to come to you, be prepared to advocate for your own achievements and ambitions while also supporting and uplifting others around you, and strive for a healthy balance between work and personal life. By staying true to your values, continuously developing your skills, and actively engaging with your community, you can make a meaningful impact in your professional life and beyond.

It's that time of year again, when promotions and tenure decisions are made across universities and if you get on social media, you'll see all the wonderful posts full of pride and joy celebrating these career milestones. What's not commonly discussed especially on social media are painful career setbacks. So that's what I want to do today. I want to repost an article I wrote for Harvard Business Review that appeared in my LinkedIn feed this morning. If you are going through a setback at work, know that you aren't alone. A big storm is necessary to clear a big enough path for all the blessings coming your way. I know this may be hard to feel and believe if you are in the midst of dealing with a painful career setback but please read my article. I hope it helps you in some small way. You don’t have to face a career setback alone. You may not want to immediately share disappointing news with anyone, but when the time is right for you, know that there are people who will listen with compassion. The only person who has the power to define our worth is ourselves. Remember this and you'll come back stronger than ever and you'll find your happy place. For me, that happy place turned out to be Northwestern University an institution that had previously only lived in my dreams. My dream of being a professor at Northwestern is now my reality. Never give up on yourself. #YouWillBeOK #YouGotThis Northwestern University Medill School #Northwestern #Academia #HigherEducation #Professors #Academic #Promotion #Career #Failure #Setback #HarvardBusinessReview
You've just been denied the promotion you had been wanting for two years. How do you regroup and grow after experiencing this setback?

#dtemcares HERITAGE DAY REFLECTION: Understanding Each Other's Journeys As we celebrate Heritage Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on the incredible diversity we encounter daily, not just in our broader society but right here in our classrooms. Each student walks a different path, carrying with them unique experiences, struggles, and stories. For some, it's the pressure of juggling academics with family responsibilities; for others, it’s the daily challenge of affording transport to get to class. We all have our own hardships, and it can be easy to forget that the person sitting next to you in class might be facing challenges you know nothing about. Some days, just making it to campus is a victory in itself. This Heritage Day, I encourage each of us to be more understanding and patient—not just with our classmates, but also with our families and ourselves. Take time to truly see each other, to listen, and to offer a hand when you can. And if you're feeling overwhelmed, know that it’s okay to seek help. There’s strength in reaching out. At the same time, we must be mindful not to take advantage of the understanding and support we extend to one another. Misrepresenting our struggles can make it harder for those truly in need to receive the help they deserve. Let’s stay honest with ourselves and each other, fostering a community built on trust and integrity. Let’s work towards building a classroom and a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported—because when we stand together, we’re stronger.

What a difference a hands-on experience can make when exploring careers! Thanks to Cleary Fairbrother Property for giving Bonnie an opportunity last week to find out what real estate is really like. And well done to Bonnie for bringing your A-game to work experience! Did you know only 40% of students in regional NSW get the chance to participate in meaningful work experience? Thanks to the FRRR (Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal) and generous local hosts, Bonnie and other Year 10 students in Bathurst are being provided with life-changing opportunities to overcome barriers and experience real work with local businesses. #lifechangingopportunity

If ever your company events, conferences, or speaking engagements feel lackluster, forgettable, and flat... I have the antidote: Eduardo Placer. Check out the powerful anecdotes in his post below, and I'll leave you with this: "🕺 If your company is looking for someone to INSPIRE, MOTIVATE, and ENERGIZE your team for Hispanic Heritage Month or National Coming Out Day, please DM [Eduardo]."
💃 . . . a 5 - 6 - 7 - 8! Nope, I wasn’t auditioning for A Chorus Line! I was in the office of the Honorable Representative Alcee Hastings (D-FL) learning how to tap dance—yaaaaas! ✨ Flashback to 1995: I had the privilege of participating in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Summer Internship Program. I was fresh out of high school, full of passion, and ready to take on the world. In deep-red Dade County, I proudly held signs that read "Pro-Choice, Pro-Clinton" in 1992 and even started an environmental club inspired by Al Gore’s Earth in the Balance. By the time I landed in DC, I had already convinced my all-male, Jesuit Catholic Prep school to stop using styrofoam. Let’s just say, I wasn’t afraid to shake things up. 😏💪🏽 That summer, I learned more than just how our government works—I also learned how to tap dance (thank you, legislative assistant)! But when I started college that fall, something even more significant happened: I came out as a gay man. In the mid-90s, before Ellen graced the cover of TIME and Will & Jack lit up our screens, it felt like coming out meant giving up my political dreams. Fast forward to today: I’m back in Washington, DC for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Conference—my first time attending since that life-changing summer. Over the past few years, I’ve embraced all of who I am: my queerness, my politics, my entrepreneurial spirit, and my Cuban roots. 🌈🇨🇺 Feeling so honored to be here alongside fellow Latino, Latina, and Latine leaders, ready to connect, collaborate, and stir up some good trouble to better our communities. ¡Azúcar! ✨💃🏻 ________ 🖐🏽 Hieeeee! I’m Eduardo Placer (he/him), Chief Story Doula, International Public Speaking Coach, & Founder of Fearless Communicators. ➕ Connect with me on LinkedIn 🕺 If your company is looking for someone to INSPIRE, MOTIVATE, and ENERGIZE your team for Hispanic Heritage Month or National Coming Out Day, please DM. #HispanicHeritageMonth #LatinoLeaders #QueerLatinx #CongressionalHispanicCaucus #RepresentationMatters #Latinidad #LGBTQLeaders #CubanPride #Authenticity #DiversityAndInclusion #GoodTrouble Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI)

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the “Be the Ultimate Assistant” workshop led by the wonderful 🔥Bonnie Low-Kramen and 🚀 Vickie Sokol Evans, MCT. Stepping into the role of an Executive Assistant has been a significant career pivot for me, and advocating for this training was a key part of my employment negotiation. I was surprised to discover that specialized training for Executive Assistants is a relatively new concept. The workshop not only deepened my understanding of the EA role and its potential for impact but also connected me with an incredible network of peers. This community is a treasure trove of knowledge and support I’ll rely on for years. Bonnie’s commitment to fostering a small, close-knit, supportive environment made all the difference, encouraging open and heartfelt discussions. It was a safe space where many of us, myself included, shared emotional stories of our experiences - reminding us all that behind every efficient executive assistant, there’s a deep well of passion and dedication. It’s no secret that the role of the Executive Assistant often lacks the recognition and respect it deserves, despite being pivotal to an organization’s success. However, trust me, leaders who understand and value our contribution are out there. It’s important for us to seek out these champions and advocate for the training and development we need to thrive at the forefront of business operations. As Bonnie so rightly says, “Staff Matters.” The right training can not only elevate the individual but can also drive a company’s success to new heights. Here’s to finding and fostering those opportunities for growth and acknowledgment within our field! #ExecutiveAssistant #ProfessionalDevelopment #BeTheUltimateAssistant #StaffMatters
