“Each of us has a choice to choose chaos or building community,” Dr. Tatum explains. To build a community of acceptance, we must actively choose community over chaos and then find out who’s missing from our community, who needs to be invited to the conversation, and whose voice isn’t being heard. “Who’s missing?” she asked. “If we answer that question, we’ll have a roadmap. So, ask the question: Who’s missing? - Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum author of “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” Are you making decisions on behalf of your organization or business? Who have you asked for input from to inform your decisions? Whose voice is missing? Have you engaged staff? The clients you serve? What about hard-to-reach people? What’s a read you should check out? Sara picked up this book, “Adrift: America in 100 Charts,” by Scott Galloway, and after hearing some of the stats she shared I (Sasha) had to pick it up myself. One of the charts details the decline in community-based activities, and the most alarming to me as someone who works in community engagement, was the percentage of adults who talk to their neighbors. What was 71% in 2008, dropped to 54% in 2017, and I can’t imagine what it is now after the COVID years, especially in a state where we encouraged people to stay home and isolate. Galloway writes, “Facebook is no substitute for face-to-face conversations or deep connection we form alongside others for the betterment of the community.” I could not agree more! As we plunge into engagement season with the sun shining and outdoor community events, I want to encourage teams to focus on building relationships throughout your communities. HOW? It can be as simple as hosting pop-up conversations at large apartment complexes, or partnering with neighborhood associations to do clean-ups. Show up with coffee, pastries, and intentional conversation topics, and KEEP showing up. One event won’t do, it’s really important to be consistent. Did you go on one date and get married to your significant other the next day? No… these things take time. Really enjoyed attending "The Power of Purpose: Exploring the Basics of Business Community Engagement" hosted by Richmond Chamber of Commerce, InUnison, United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg, and Community Foundation yesterday. My key takeaways: 1) Business Community Engagement has so many positive ripple effects on the company, volunteers/employees, and community. Engagement begets more engagement which begets even more engagement and small actions add up. 2) The business case for Community Engagement is strong. From retention to recruiting to marketing, it's also a great financial investment. For all my L+D friends, it was also a great reminder that the best learning is often very simple. Here’s a myth I hear all the time: The bigger your community, the better. But here’s the truth: A smaller, engaged community will always outperform a large, inactive one. Think about it. What’s the point of having thousands of members if no one’s talking, sharing, or engaging? Research shows that loyalty and trust come from depth in connection, not size. When members feel seen, heard, and valued, they stick around. They contribute. And they invite others to join. So instead of focusing on growing your member count, focus on growing relationships. Ask questions. Celebrate wins. Create opportunities for real interaction. Remember, it’s not about how many people are in your community. It’s about how many are showing up. What’s your take?
