Apparently it's World Fencing Day. Similar to Charis Hawkley I'm guessing, this is a bittersweet occasion, tinged with both love and sadness. I used to fence, and fence well. The head coach at Germany's Olympische Fechtclub in Bonn once called me "an artist", and for people who know English football, someone once compared me with Nottingham Forest (though today, pehaps you'd compare me with Leeds United): I wasn't in the very top tier, but I was high enough up what you'd call "the chasing pack" that no one was surprised when I beat the internationals. Imagine Everton playing Leeds in the FA Cup - Everton may be in the Premier League, but no one would be dumbfounded were they to lose to Leeds. This, despite my #dyspraxia. But it took *lots* of dedication, practice, and obsession. Fencing was my life. For many people, I was defined by it. And of course, being #dyspraxic, I got injured, often. Now, I'm unable to fence. My knee has completely given up the ghost, and no one in my area teaches wheelchair fencing. Imagine that. There's no one who accommodates for disabled fencers. No one. So today, on World Fencing Day, I'd like to raise awareness. Not of fencing, but of the lack of service to those of us who are incapacitated, needing reasonable adjustments that no one's prepared to provide. #fencing #worldfencingday #wheelchairfencing #paralympics #disabled #disability #disabledsport #disabledsports #accommodations

Happy world fencing day! Fencing and me have a very difficult relationship being both disabled and the only female sabre fencer at my club comes with challenges. I say I have a very much love hate relationship with the sport. I am always honoured when other dyspraxic people are inspired by my fencing but I often feel undeserving of the admiration.
