A Call for Men to Step Up >Child sexual abuse is a devastating public health crisis that affects over 10% of children worldwide. Yet, doctors, teachers, parents, and officials are not taking action to address it with the same urgency as other preventable diseases. In this powerful TED talk, Jackson Katz, Ph.D. argues that tackling the epidemic of violence against women, including child sexual abuse, is a critical responsibility for the male community. As Katz states, "Violence against women isn't a women's issue. It's a men's issue." Men play a key role in both perpetuating and preventing child sexual abuse. The vast majority of perpetrators are male, and men have a unique ability to influence the attitudes and behaviors of other men and boys. By getting engaged, speaking out, and modeling healthy masculinity, men can be powerful allies in the fight against child sexual abuse. Our report on the magnitude of child sexual abuse in Hong Kong underscores the urgent need for all community members, especially men, to get involved. Only by working together can we protect our children and build a safe future for all. Our rationale to engage men and boys in violence prevention emphasizes four elements: 1. Any work to prevent violence must engage men and boys, because it is frequently (but not exclusively) men who enact violence. 2. Harmful constructions of masculinity and related social norms and attitudes can encourage violent behaviour. 3. Men and boys have a positive and constructive role to play in preventing violence. 4. Through a trauma-informed approach, we can recognise that many boys and men have lived-experience of harmful gender norms, and even violence. Acknowledging this enables a compassionate and constructive conversation about the role of men and boys as change-makers, allies and ambassadors. ⚠️💔 The scale and universality of violence against women and violence against children continues to be alarming. Globally, 1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 7 boys alive today have experienced sexual violence before they turned 18. Our understanding of violence is supported by a growing and strengthening evidence base. Investments in research so far have helped us to understand drivers of VAW and VAC and have produced a handful of interventions and programmes to reduce violence. However, we need to turn that knowledge into solutions because there is #NoExcuse to #EndViolence. 💡 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞? ✊ During these 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, beginning on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we’ll share one action each day that can help strengthen the field and foster long-term, structural change. These recommendations are compiled in an article written by the SVRI for the ‘16 For 16’ campaign of The Pixel Project: https://lnkd.in/dHJpmBgX #16Days #16DaysofActivism #EndViolence #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #EndChildSexualViolence #ResearchforImpact #EvidenceBased #NoExcuse #OrangeTheWorld

What actions – big or small – will you be taking in the next 16 days to help end violence against women? Here are 6 ideas: 1. Take a stand publicly: Say there is #NoExcuse for gender-based violence. 2. Challenge gender stereotypes that contribute to a culture of violence against women & girls, online and offline. 3. Engage in activities & events to raise awareness in your community. 4. Support a women’s rights organisation 5. Ask your government to invest in prevention 6. Or at the very least, please repost this message to help spread the word to inspire others to act. #EndViolenceAgainstWomen? #16Days #NoExcuse

Today marks the beginning of the #18DayCampaign to end Violence against Women and Girls. 📢 Girls and young women in all their diversity deserve to be safe from all forms of violence, online and offline. Sadly, today’s challenges brought about by conflicts, climate crisis, and the rise of online sexual abuse and exploitation cases place them at higher risk of #GenderBasedViolence. Take action to protect girls and young women today. Open safe, inclusive spaces for them to be heard and participate in matters that affect them. #UniteForPeace #UniteForProtection #BeatOSAEC
