I can't stress the importance of offering a GREAT internship experience for future civil engineers. The education is more challenging when compared to other fields. Roughly 50% of engineers will drop out or change majors. There is a lot that can be improved upon on the educational side of things, but if employers can create an engaging and rewarding internship process, more engineers will stick to their education. Why wouldn't you want to improve your own talent pipeline and help grow the civil community? #CivilEngineering #TalentAcquisition #InternshipProgram #AECRecruiting #Recruiting #Hiring

Hey there, fellow Civil Engineering interns! This internship can be tough sometimes. You might be surrounded by experienced engineers, tackling complex projects, and feeling a little overwhelmed. But that's exactly why internships are so valuable – they're a chance to learn and grow! Here's the thing: every engineer, even the most brilliant ones we admire today, started as interns. They asked questions, made some mistakes, and eventually learned from them. So don't get discouraged if things don't click right away. Embrace the challenges – they're opportunities to build your skills and gain real-world experience. Here are few tips to keep you on track: 1️⃣Focus on the learning: This internship is about soaking up knowledge. Don't be afraid to ask questions, no matter how basic they may seem. From your supervisors even to artisans, ask! The more you learn now, the stronger your foundation will be. 2️⃣Maintain a positive attitude: A can-do spirit is contagious! It shows your superiors you're eager to learn and contribute. Also, a positive outlook makes the whole experience more enjoyable. 3️⃣Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone: Internships are a great time to try new things. Volunteer for different tasks, even if they seem unfamiliar. You might discover hidden talents or passions! 4️⃣Remember, every contribution matters: Even the seemingly small tasks you're doing are important parts of the bigger picture. You're playing a role in bringing these civil engineering projects to life! This internship is a stepping stone to your future as a civil engineer. The Hustle to Land My First Internship "Hello, is this XYZ Construction Company? My name is Quinter Obuong', a civil engineering graduate currently living in ABC Town, and I’m looking for an internship opportunity." Who can relate? At that moment, I wasn’t sure if these companies were even getting my emails or even looking at my CV because i had sent a couple with no response. So, I took a more direct route: calling them. In one day, I called over seven companies, and each one said, "No, sorry, we’re not taking interns at the moment. Then, one heavenly sent company called me back because they had missed my call. It was still a "no," but something told me to push a little further. The man on the phone said they had no internship positions, so I asked, "How about I just come to your office to learn and network with people in my profession?" This company specialized in consultancy, structural, and architectural plans. To my surprise, he agreed, saying, "Okay, come tomorrow, and let’s see what you can do." The deal was simple—I was there to learn. No payment, no royalties. For the next three months, I was given more and more materials to practice with. One day, they handed me a client’s architectural plan and asked me to come up with a structural drawing. Jeez... I did it! Soon after, I started receiving small tokens of appreciation—my transport was covered, and sometimes they even took care of lunch. Those guys honestly shaped me for my next role. They gave me a stepping stone, and I’m forever grateful. I was only there for 3 months, and before they broke for the December holiday, I got a call while I was at the office. It was from the company I’m currently working for. They had seen my application and asked if I could report immediately. When I told the team about the call, everyone was so happy for me. The director asked what they had asked me to bring (NSSF, NHIF, etc.). When I told him, he asked how much I needed to sort everything out, and to my surprise, they gave me the money and let me check out earlier to get everything done. The rest is history. #PersistencePaysOff #CivilEngineering #InternshipJourney #CareerGrowth #ConstructionLife #Networking

I have successfully completed my summer internship at ECS Limited. I have learned a lot about construction materials, specifically concrete and soil. I have gone through what I learned extensively about concrete and soil in my past LinkedIn posts. In this post, I will discuss one key takeaway from my internship. And that is COMMUNICATION. Something as simple as asking questions when you have exhausted all your options is essential to do your job as efficiently as possible. Or explaining to the site superintendent how to better compact the soil after obtaining the results from the nuclear gauge. Even simple small talk can be effective in the long run. My experience with communication at ECS Limited has taught me that clear, timely, and effective communication helps avoid misunderstandings, ensures everyone is on the same page, and ultimately leads to better outcomes. I am grateful to Holly Kauer, Anthony Troiani, E.I.T., Coleman McDaniel, Jonathan Yandle, and the other co-workers I've worked with during my internship for further guiding me toward becoming a successful civil engineer. I am also grateful to Rachelle Beckner, EMBA, for preparing civil engineering students specifically for communication in the Springer Curriculum. The communication skills I learned in Springer helped me immensely during my internship. Effective communication is the key takeaway I will carry forward in my career, knowing that excellent communication is the foundation of great work. PS: The video below is the placement of a tilt panel! The placement process takes around 30 minutes. The concrete was poured on top of the pad and then lifted and placed as a wall after it settled. If you're reading this, I hope you had a great summer!
