In developing countries, the impact of animal parasites is even more pronounced due to limited resources for veterinary care and public health interventions. Livestock, crucial for subsistence farmers, suffer from debilitating parasitic infections that reduce milk production, weight gain, and overall health, leading to economic hardship. Additionally, the burden of zoonotic diseases places a strain on already fragile healthcare systems. For example, hydatid disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus can result in significant morbidity and mortality, with treatment options often being expensive and inaccessible. #animalparasitism

One Health Day is a global campaign that takes place on 3rd November. It is a concept that focuses on improving the health of humans and animals by integrating the sciences of human medicine, veterinary medicine and environmental studies. The One Health approach can help address many public health threats, including: Zoonotic diseases, Antibiotic resistance Vector-borne diseases, Food safety and security, Chronic disease, Mental health etc. The One Health approach is based on the idea that no one person, organization, or sector can address issues at the animal-human-environment interface alone. Successful public health interventions require cooperation among human, animal, and environmental health partners. The theme for One Health Day, 2024 is "Protecting humans, animals, and the environment for a healthier world for all".

Doing some scientific literature scanning, I was impressed by the findings of Thailand environmentalist colleagues, showing that exposure of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia to paraquat, a herbicide commonly used to control weeds, induces the development of strains with increased resistance to multiple #antimicrobials, including some medically important for both human and veterinary medicine (https://lnkd.in/ddSXx_cF) You might already be aware that S. maltophilia is an environmental bacterium often linked to nosocomial infections in humans, being also a cause of respiratory infections in horses and other animal species. Aren’t those elements proof of the fact that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent ? As a veterinary diagnostician, I find joy in identifying problems and providing solutions. However, implementing these solutions in the field can be challenging, especially when clients fail to play their roles. A recent experience illustrates this: A client presented a case involving bird health issues on his farm. Our laboratory diagnosis revealed the root cause, and I provided a well-structured treatment plan. Despite this, the client reported persistent mortality, questioning the effectiveness of the recommended drugs and even went ahead to try other non-recommended drugs. Upon re-evaluation, we isolated the same organism, and the same drugs remained sensitive. To resolve the issue, I conducted a farm visit, revealing: - Poor biosecurity measures - Poor litter management - Unhygienic farm practices - Water starvation due to blocked pipeline nipples, preventing access of drugs to some of the sick birds Addressing these management issues led to a drastic drop in mortality and improved health. The client attributed it to 'magic,' but I knew the true catalyst was improved management practices. Dear farmers, remember: administering multiple drugs isn't always the solution. Prof. Vashnee Govender, Lecturer in Veterinary Public Health at the University of Pretoria, presented on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) under the theme of preventive healthcare. Prof. Govender emphasised the global significance of AMR, calling it the “silent pandemic” that poses a major threat to human, animal, and environmental health, yet fails to garner the attention it deserves. Prof. Govender explained the extensive use of antimicrobials in livestock, not only for treating sick animals but also for preventing disease and promoting growth. This widespread use of antibiotics, she noted, leads to the contamination of the environment with resistant bacteria and antibiotic residues, which affect soil, water, and eventually crops consumed by humans. In this way, even vegetarians and vegans are not exempt from exposure to antibiotic residues. The risks, she added, extend to direct transmission of resistant bacteria through close animal contact, especially for farm workers and pet owners, as well as through contaminated food products of animal origin like meat, eggs, and milk. Prof. Govender highlighted the need for a concerted global effort to address AMR as a critical One Health issue, underscoring that protecting animal health is vital to ensuring human and environmental well-being. #hsup #onehealth #universityofpretoria

Superbugs may be fighting dirty, but we can have them outnumbered. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical, complex issue that transcends human and animal health. That’s why we work with leaders across the One Health Spectrum to develop long-term, responsible solutions. Throughout the year, we work with international institutions including universities, global health organizations, veterinary medicine professionals and farm animal producers’ associations to conduct seminars and laboratory training. In addition, we continue to develop solutions that result is reducing the need for antibiotic use in animals such as vaccines and nutritional health products. These superbugs won’t go down without a fight, but together with a One Health mindset, we’re prepared to fight back.
