Why are fish discarded in the #fishing industry? There are several reasons why fish are discarded, but the main factors include: Fishing regulations: fish are returned to the #sea if they are below the minimum landing size or if the fisher has no quota for them. Economic reasons: fish with low market value or limited storage space on #vessels can lead to ‘high grading’ (discarding less valuable species to make room for more valuable ones). Damaged catch: sometimes #fish are damaged or have no commercial value. Through our research, we aim to find solutions to reduce this practice, creating more resource-efficient systems and minimizing impacts on marine #ecosystems. A fight over efforts to calculate potential bonuses for #Newfoundland snow #crab harvesters has turned divisive in the group that represents processors in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). The Association of Seafood Producers has filed an urgent application with the provincial Labor Relations Board, asking it to order Quin-Sea Fisheries, a processing company owned by the Danish crown corporation Royal Greenland, Royal Greenland to cooperate in an effort to make good on the earlier promise made through a collective agreement early in the 2024 season. Mississippi MarketMaker. Vol. 14, No. 12 / Direct Losses on Mississippi Saltwater Recreational Fishing Licenses Sold to Fishermen Trend analysis of data from 2000 to 2023 shows that the number of licenses sold to saltwater recreational fishing mostly declined after major disaster events such as Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Bonnet Carre Spillway openings in 2011 and 2019, and the and the COVID-19 global pandemic. These disasters severely impacted the number of shrimp and oyster recreational fishermen and have not recovered to pre-disaster levels. Mean-difference analysis showed the direct losses in the number of licenses sold, averaging about 280 saltwater sport fishermen annually from 2019 to 2023, representing almost three out of ten fishermen. Fewer saltwater fishermen were harvesting crab, shrimps, and oyster for their own consumption. Each recreational fishing license not sold implies lesser purchases of fuel, food and drinks, fishing gear, bait, and other fishing-related expenditures. https://lnkd.in/gb4sgMy9
