👏I was discussing this with my friend reflecting on how difficult it can be to stop and recognise your unwell. We said it's because when you always feel unwell, you have no other option but to push on. This relates especially to experiencing a late diagnosis of ADHD or ASD which too often leads to a profound struggle, especially when you've spent your entire life pushing through challenges without understanding the underlying reasons. This relentless effort can culminate in burnout, at which point well-meaning but misguided comments like "Why didn't you say anything?" or "You should have said something!" arise. These comments overlook the reality that you've been conditioned to push forward despite physical and mental exhaustion. The advice to "be kinder to yourself" often misses the mark, failing to recognise that for those with late-diagnosed ADHD or ASD, the instinct to keep going despite the toll it takes is deeply ingrained. Additionally, this constant pushing can mean you become out of tune with your body, as you're so used to having to push on regardless of how you feel. This is why post-diagnosis, is a rollacoaster of emotion and learning; your reconnecting with your senses and viewing yourself and the 🌎 differently.

If we have spent our entire lives doing all the background work that masking consists of, and being in a near-enough constant state of fight or flight, we haven’t been able to stop and think, ‘How am I feeling right now?’
We have been stuck in survival mode rather than having the capacity to focus on anything other than getting through the current ‘danger’.

How might you consider your beliefs and values as an educator? How might they shape your curriculum decisions involving digital technology?
Come along to my workshop next week (in-person in Wellington or online anywhere!) with Music Education Network and utilise the self-assessment survey tool I've developed from my PhD research!
The goal of the workshop is for music teachers to leave empowered with a deeper understanding of themselves as music educators and how they can personally respond to the evolving landscape of music education with digital technology.
