Hard trends show a coming inflection point between careers and caregiving responsibilities. It will hit its peak in the 2030’s, but we are already there in many cases. ***Yet, not one hand went up in the #ENGAGE24 session yesterday when I asked if their firm/organization had ever inquired to understand about their caregiving roles and responsibilities.*** {And while talking about working parents’ and working caregivers’ needs can feel very personal, even “fluffy”— and sometimes emotionally charged—this is actually a business imperative for firms and organizations.} It is time to get serious as employers about how we are going to care for our working caregivers, understanding the implications of not (losing talent in a tight talent market tops the list!). Employers who truly care for caregivers of all types could choose to have a distinctive employer value proposition in this lane. Go all on. The most common barriers for disabled people finding paid work are surrounding accessibility in work environments and, sadly, a lack of awareness and empathy from employers. Becoming a Big Issue vendor is a means for people to earn an income, be self-employed, work hours that suit them, and have autonomy over their working life. For some of our disabled vendors, this flexibility allows them to work in ways that suit them and their health needs. #BigIssueNorth #BigIssue #Awareness
