Savannah is a passionate and dedicated student at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace in San Diego, California. Actively involved in her school's ambassador, Thirst Project, and The Humane Society of the United States clubs, she is committed to making a positive impact in her community. Savannah chose to work with DARTCC because of her deep love for animals and her desire to contribute to #Disaster response efforts that protect pets and wildlife. She is impressed with DARTCC’s innovative approach to #DisasterRelief, particularly their focus on #animals, who are often overlooked in emergency situations. This summer, Savannah aims to develop her leadership and teamwork skills while gaining valuable experience in disaster management. She hopes to enhance her knowledge of large-scale planning and project management, as well as expand her research abilities. Savannah plans to contribute to DARTCC by creating a comprehensive database of animal rescue organizations across the United States and assisting with the local implementation of the DARTCC app in #california. In her free time, Savannah also enjoys volunteering, reading, and participating in various community service activities. "When you imagine the wildlife of Minnesota, what type of animals do you think of? Take a few seconds to think of a few. While there are so many options, due to our high number of water bodies in the state I can almost guarantee at least one person thought of turtles! Turtles are some of most unique animals we have in Minnesota and to celebrate World Turtle Day (which is May 23rd), I’d like to offer some quick facts about each of the nine turtles in Minnesota." ✍ Jake Richards, IT Specialist Individual Placement / AmeriCorps Member placed at Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks and Trails https://lnkd.in/gUKHNXcJ #EnvironmentalCareers #ConservationCareers #ServiceYear #CareerExperience #YearOutdoors #ServeOutdoors [Image Description] A turtle with a domed shell and yellow chin on a gravel area. Students from Front Range Community College and Colorado State University are partnering with state agencies to create safer wildlife crossings in the Livermore Valley, just north of Fort Collins. Since 2020, this innovative team has been exploring solutions like repurposing an underpass on US 287 to protect both animals and drivers. It's a great example of students using their education to make a real-world impact. Learn more about their efforts: https://lnkd.in/g753qrej

The Florida Panther Payment for Ecosystem Services Program has seen great initial success! 🐆 Our partners at Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida, and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation just released an update showing private landowner involvement and interest in the program. With more funding, more landowners can be enrolled which provides vital habitat as well as crucial movement data which will further Florida Panther conservation. 🌿
Securing expansive, connected land is vital for the survival of Florida panthers, with adult males requiring about 200 square miles to thrive. Habitat fragmentation forces these endangered animals to cross roadways, leading to increased vehicle collisions. Alarmingly, 2024 has seen at least 30 panther fatalities due to car accidents, surpassing last year’s total. The Florida Panther Payment for Ecosystem Services Pilot Program, for which our Foundation helped secure $1.5 million in federal funding and donated an additional $400,000, is already delivering promising results for panther conservation. Together with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, our Foundation is proud to play a pivotal role in advancing this innovative initiative. Here’s a snapshot of the program’s success so far:

Today is #WorldRewildingDay. If you're unfamiliar with the term: Rewilding is the process of protecting an environment and returning it to its natural state, including by bringing back wild animals that used to live there. One major rewilding effort we're working on: restoring grizzly bears to California. The grizzly bear is California’s state animal and the centerpiece of its flag and seal — but a grizzly hasn’t roamed the wilds of the Golden State in 100 years. Decades of persecution — not habitat loss — drove grizzlies off the landscape. Returning these animals to the state’s open spaces is a key step in rewilding California and protecting one of America’s most iconic species. Learn more: https://biodiv.us/3PsWPQU

It’s no secret that Best Friends is working towards a moonshot mission of getting the entire country to no-kill by the end of 2025. As of October 1, 64% of all shelters—3,923 in total—are no-kill, and 47 more shelters are trending toward this status, which is phenomenal! Now, I know you’re thinking, “64% seems a long way from 100%”, which is why this next stat is so exciting: 56% of the remaining shelters are on the cusp of no-kill, less than 100 animals away from reaching the 90% benchmark. To close these gaps, Best Friends is focused on strengthening our support of communities that are very close to achieving no-kill, and we are using the Best Friends Network to make that happen. Find out more below!

It’s trauma season in the Northern Rivers, and local wildlife carers are feeling the strain like never before. With breeding and migration in full swing, the number of injured, sick, and orphaned animals is overwhelming already stretched services. “Demand for care keeps growing, and many carers and centres are being pushed to their limits, with some even having to temporarily close due to a lack of resources and trained staff.” This growing crisis shows just how urgently we need expanded, centralised care. That’s where NRWH is stepping in. The soon-to-open wildlife hospital in Wollongbar will be a game-changer, providing a central hub to support all seven local government areas. It’ll mean faster response times and much-needed relief for local carers and existing services. Last year alone, over 11,000 native animals were rescued across the Northern Rivers, and this year is on track to be even busier. “We’re committed to changing things for the better,” says Potts. “With the hospital and the transport van, we’ll be able to respond quickly and provide life-saving care when it matters most.” The need for better support has never been more urgent. With your support, we can make sure the Northern Rivers’ precious wildlife gets the care they deserve. #NRWH #WildlifeCare #NorthernRiversWildlife #SupportWildlife

Its #TLevelsWeek 🤷 Whassat? Oh, OK - its the qualifications for 16 to 19-year-olds which focus on vocational skills in subjects such as Digital, Construction, Finance and Healthcare. The Wildlife Trusts are working with Gatsby Charitable Foundation developing relationships with education providers and young people to learn how to improve our inclusivity and support people at the start of their careers. Northumberland Wildlife Trust, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) and the central team of Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts are developing a better understanding of how to help people gain career opportunities through different types of work placements and entry level roles across all aspects of running a charity. We want to get better at supporting people to develop skills for their future careers that offer opportunities to connect with nature without needing to own 'muddy boots' 😊 https://lnkd.in/eYEvgGaY

Wildlife-killing contests are exceedingly barbaric events in which participants are rewarded with cash and other prizes for the most, the largest, or even the youngest animals massacred. While these events are often publicized as a means of “wildlife-population control”—an absurd concept in itself that they fail to accomplish—they’re nothing more than bloodbaths that tear wild families apart and leave orphaned young to starve. Ten states have already banned these gruesome contests, and now Congress has reintroduced the Prohibit Wildlife Killing Contests Act (HR 8492), which, if passed, would put an end to these cruel events on all federally owned public land. Take action by using the form linked to contact your U.S. representative and urge them to cosponsor and support HR 8492. https://lnkd.in/dSTd2WHC #wildlife #cruelty #TakeAction #advocate #AnimalRights #AnimalJustice #activism #NoExcuse4AnimalAbuse #NeverBeSilent #EndSpeciesism #advocacy
