Throughout my career, I've become increasingly aware of the critical role that policy plays in shaping the landscape of workforce development. From funding for education and training programs to incentives for industry partnerships, the decisions made by policymakers can profoundly impact the effectiveness of workforce development initiatives. Advocating for policy reforms that support comprehensive, inclusive, and adaptive workforce development strategies is a key part of my mission. This involves not only increasing investment in education and training but also ensuring that policies reflect the realities of the modern labor market, including the needs of gig workers and the importance of lifelong learning. We need to spend more time discussing the intersection of policy and workforce development. Let's explore how targeted reforms can remove barriers to employment, encourage innovation in education and training, and ultimately build a more skilled, resilient, and competitive workforce.

Of all the commentary we will see about #juneteenth today, the most important statements will take the form of action — including by employers who continue to work to close persistent disparities in employment and opportunity. At TalentFirst, we recognize that West Michigan can only succeed if everyone can thrive here. This recognition is the basis for our DE&I Toolkit, our DE&I Benchmark Survey, and our CEO Commitment. Our region still has work to do. But these strategic, practical actions provide a means to celebrate the freedom that Juneteenth represents, and to help make it meaningful for future generations. https://lnkd.in/ecqKaD_j

As many of you are aware, Wisconsin is grappling with significant workforce shortages, and our talent pools continue to shrink. This challenge impacts not only our businesses but also the communities we serve. One effective solution is investing in continuing education for our employees. By equipping them with new skills, we empower them to take ownership of their work and foster a sense of autonomy. This investment doesn’t just benefit employees—it breeds innovation and productivity, driving our organizations forward. Employers who prioritize continuing education see tangible returns: improved employee engagement, reduced turnover, and a stronger, more skilled workforce. It’s a win-win! I’m excited to invite you to the Gain & Retain: Empowering the Workforce of the Future event on Friday, October 18, 2024, at UW-Green Bay. We're not fooling around when it comes to workforce development! President Andrea Daniel and Tia Stroud, executive director for secondary initiatives, were featured in this month's Georgia Trend feature on the Technical College System of Georgia. “Our new building is a clean training area that simulates these [types of] companies,” Daniel says. “We put a big emphasis on high-demand programs because the need is there. I never hear any complaints about our graduates because we warranty our graduates, but I do hear we need more. This facility allows us to provide more. Last year [2022-2023], we had a 28% increase in our high-demand programs at our college in terms of enrollment. Last term [fall 2023], we had an almost [8%] increase in our for-credit programs. So that shows the interest and illustrates the need.” 🔗 https://lnkd.in/efXm2E7p
