The #1 question I get from people looking to join startup tech is, 'Is it secure?" And the answer I give every time is "Absolutely not". As great as it would be, tech is an ever-changing industry, more so in the last couple of years. I've talked to several people this week who were top performers and were either laid off or are leaving because of a toxic culture. And it reminded me of a lesson I learned really early. Tech is always a gamble. Every company will say that they have it figured out. Focus on figuring out *who* you want to work with. Can you see yourself working though problems with the people you interview with? Celebrating wins and taking losses? Those are the best factors you can account for. The people always matters most.

I got into tech 8 years ago, and I started 3 businesses during that time - a software company with customers in over a dozen countries, a co-working center for startups that failed miserably (terrible idea, don’t do it), and a sales recruiting practice that was absorbed by RevsUp in 2022. In today’s startup culture, 3 years is a long time for an employee to stay in a tech company.  Even when there is a predictable workload, ample leisure time, and an obvious career progression. It’s a bigger deal during turbulent times. Last Friday, our first hire Mauro Javier Giamberardino, completed 3 years with us. He's stuck with us through thick and thin, having started at Levo.ai even before me (I had to wait a few months due to VISA issues). And I don’t say this just for the sake of it. Almost a year ago, the initial excitement of building something new was wearing off, and our POCs were getting delayed/stuck due to organizational red tape. And when such low times strike, we all get momentarily dejected. Yet Mauro kept going with a big smile on his face and told me - "No matter what happens to Levo.ai (next fundraise/ IPO / Closure), I want to be there for the entire journey." Moments like these and team members like Mauro underpin much of the resilience I, as a Founder, possess to keep going despite all odds. It’s not just his unwavering commitment that’s praiseworthy, but also his technical skills and proficiency as a full-stack developer. I feel both blessed and proud that we have been able to hire and retain a gem like him.  Being a founder in the incredibly crowded security space, I get pushback from every direction. But knowing that team members like Mauro have my back no matter what makes the journey much smoother and is an additional motivation to make it big in this space. Once again, I am incredibly grateful for the time, dedication, and trust Mauro’s invested in us. And I only aspire to reciprocate it with all the success we achieve in the upcoming years. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for startups to hire employees due to situations like this. If you fire good employees just to slightly improve your balance sheet, good luck attracting top talent when it’s time to grow, because word gets around quickly. This doesn’t just hurt the company doing the firing but also affects other startups, as quality candidates may hesitate to join smaller companies, fearing instability. #StartupCulture #HiringChallenges #EmployeeRetention
