It was a pleasure to hear from some of our region’s top construction leaders at the Construction Forum’s St. Louis vs Anybody event at UMSL yesterday!
It was a refreshingly honest discussion. Here are a few key takeaways I gained from the event:
🛠️ The craftsmanship in our region is top-notch! Our skilled workers are so exceptional that leaders noted we often send talent to other states to complete projects that don't have the skill to finish projects.
💪 We need to recognize and amplify our strengths and repeat that story. While St. Louis excels in many areas, we can take inspiration from other Midwest cities like Detroit and Kansas City to better communicate what we do well.
☀️ Let’s speak positively about our region—even in casual conversations. We know there are issues in our area and it’s easy to focus on bad news, but speaking about the things that are going well can make a big impact on perception.
🚂 There’s no magic solution to fix everything. Consistent base hits will help us make progress and catch up to surrounding regions. There is no silver bullet that will solve all our issues.
🤝 Long-term leadership is essential. That includes the private sector, we need a group of 20+ business leaders to champion and tell the story we want to tell about our region.
🏘️ Community engagement is non-negotiable. Before any project begins, it’s crucial to prioritize the voices and needs of local residents. Building trust and empowering communities will lead to better outcomes for everyone. That means knocking on doors and holding listening sessions. Maggie Kost did an excellent job of speaking to the importance of this.

1️⃣ Always do the right thing
This is our company’s first core value.
A lot of people claim to live by this, but often it is just lip service. While this value may seem straightforward and obvious, it’s often easier said than done.
Would you still do the right thing in every instance instead of taking the convenient or easy way, even if you knew nobody would ever find out?
It means prioritizing honesty over comfort, ethical choices over convenience, and transparency over shortcuts.
If you always do the right thing, you never have to worry about those wrong choices catching up to you.
"You know what to do. Just do the right thing.”
Former president of national restaurant group Chart House, Shawn Holder (also Shay Hughes’ dad) lives by this mantra, which he also credits with his personal and professional success, as well as the success of the growth of the Chart House. From humble beginnings as a dishwasher at Chart House, Shawn rose to president of the company through his immense personal drive, thoughtful leadership style and genuine desire to see those around him succeed.
Our first core value at Hughes Marino is to “always do the right thing,” and Shay is proud to say that this value stemmed from her dad’s example he set for himself and everyone around him. ⚡SCP’s Infrastructure team recently took another trip to RSK Group’s Argrennan House in Scotland.
💼 SCP met with RSK Civil and Structural businesses in the Geosciences & Engineering, and Environment and Planning divisions to discuss the continuous development of the business.
🚀 The trip included workshops to understand leadership types, as well as to identity any opportunities of collaboration across the company.
💡Steven Carmody said “This trip was important for SCP because the development of the cross market services to offer Civil and Structural Services to the Market, is a key part to the development of our business. With over 200 Civil and Structural staff, there is not much SCP/RSK cannot deliver”

The local govt sector needs to be better. From both a Council and an administrative perspective.
I believe everyone legitimately means well. However we are currently stuck in antiquated processes that are not serving anyone well.
The good news is there are ways to make things better. It will require some work, some leadership and some stamina.
Councils are elected and told that the budget is the most important thing they will do. While the budget is critical to get things done and quite often the thing the public hears the most about - it is a tool that is helpful to articulate the true most important thing. Delivering services, programs and infrastructure deemed most important by our communities.
Some will argue these are one and the same. And here is where we fall down as administration, in my opinion. Once we assume they are the same we have been complacent in looking at only the numbers applied to these offerings and employ across the board “strategies” to find “efficiencies”. It all sounds good except it isn’t. Here me out.
We are forgoing the very first step in “budgeting”. It is more appropriately called business planning. We need to look critically at our current offerings, before costing them out, to gauge how well they are continuing to align to community priorities. Those priorities sitting in the Strategic Plan crafted by Council after having heard from their public. This is where “efficiencies” can be found if we have the leadership stamina to stop supporting things that have decreased alignment and value. And then reallocate those funds to higher value areas.
Done well these efforts will accomplish what is being asked for right now but with more logic applied. It sets up both Council and administration for better conversations with each other and our public. Yes, those areas where reallocations come from will be impacted. And yes, they will impact people and citizens. But if these areas are simply being supported because of historical spend and they simply do not align they must be reallocated. We cannot continue to forgo looking at our current spend critically.
Yesterday, Council defeated my motion to cut $2.5 million from the top of The City's organizational chart.
This isn’t how responsible organizations operate. Businesses and other boards of directors across Calgary streamline leadership to ensure efficiency and accountability. Why should City Hall be any different?
In February, we gave clear direction to Administration to find efficiencies so we could reinvest in critical services Calgarians rely on. The results? Minimal savings and no real change. This motion wasn’t about overstepping our role but about holding Administration accountable and using our exclusive budgetary power to lead by example.
Calgarians are tightening their belts and doing more with less. It’s past time City Hall did the same. I won’t stop advocating for better leadership, smarter spending, and a City Council that respects your hard-earned dollars.
