Today is the Oscars, awards are granted by a group of peers, reminding me of the similarities in the professional world as well. As Latina, I have shared experiences with many of my professional sisters, whether in the public or private sector. We were always "too (add adjective)" or "not enough (add adjective)" because of our enthusiasm, joy, creativity, flexibility, and productivity displayed loudly or colorfully via our voices (some with accents further "communication separation"), facial expressions, and attire. We learn to be chameleons mitigating misunderstanding while attempting to measure up to "their" expectations of what and how we should represent the who and what we were. Not only is it an exhausting transformation because expectations may change daily or hourly, it denies our true voice at the table, which by the way is well served with the spice, talent, flavor, creativity, and colorful perspective which we bring. As an immigrant, I am very grateful for the experience that my adopted country has afforded me. I accept and celebrate that I stand strongly on the shoulders of many before me. Remember that phrase, "Immigrants get things done?" I realize I must take responsibility for presenting as my true self, a professional Latina in a work environment that may scurry away from my loud, colorful, passionate presentation and will benefit for exactly the same reasons. (I wonder if this is the true oxymoron my English professor encouraged me to figure out as I graduated with my B.A.in English?)

To thrive, you must love what you do, and when you do, obstacles transform into challenges that help you redefine yourself. This journey allows you to carve your own path and create a team that shares your vibe. In my own teaching experience, I’ve tackled tough topics by going beyond the conventional rules. This approach not only engaged my students but also allowed us to explore deeper insights together. Remember, there is a legendary performer within you from day one. Identify that part of yourself and fit it into a path that resonates with your passion. Instead of getting caught up in negative comments about toxic environments or difficult people, focus on your journey and let your performance shine.
