No discussion about organizational success today can overlook the pivotal role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). It's fascinating how DEI isn't just a peripheral element but the very core of strategic priorities affecting every aspect of an organization. Reflecting on a recent exploration of DEI, it struck me how integral these principles are to every strategic decision and policy. DEI acts like a thread that if pulled, unravels the essence of challenges and opportunities within any strategy. One key takeaway is the emotion often associated with DEI discussions: guilt. Yet, guilt, while a natural response for some, isn't what should define our engagement with DEI. Rather than an atmosphere of blame, DEI discussions should foster an invitation to learn, grow, and participate actively in creating an inclusive culture. Drawing inspiration from Maya Angelou's words to "know better, do better," let's shift our focus from guilt to empowerment. Organizations that prioritize attracting employees from the global majority and other marginalized groups as the first step in their DEI process set themselves up for failure. When no foundation is laid - without cultural competence education for leaders and staff, comprehensive DEI strategic planning, accountability metrics and feedback mechanisms - the necessary cultural shifts within the organization don’t take place. This putting the cart before the proverbial horse signals a lack of understanding of what a genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion involves and raises concerns about the organization's ability to diversify its workforce and retain the very individuals they say they want. #dei #diversityequityinclusion
