In the last couple days, I've had the chance to attend two inspiring lectures hosted by the BYU UXD Association, featuring UX Designers from FamilySearch and DoorDash. As I prepare to enter the UX field and actively seek internships and entry-level roles, hearing from designers Michelle Barber, Hannah Brooks, and Carson Jardine has been incredibly motivating. I enjoyed learning from their personal experiences working in UX, and the unique career paths that took them where they are today. Here are a few key themes I gathered from their lectures: Imitate and Adapt - A powerful way to keep honing hard skills is by imitating the products you use every day. Rebuild existing products and adapt them to solve needs they currently don’t address. Tell a Compelling Story - A successful product is only complete with a great story. Engage your audience with purposeful narratives that elevate your designs and transform good ideas into memorable ones. Stay Optimistic - Daunting projects and an uncertain job market can feel overwhelming. It's important to remember that our mindset shapes our outlook. Approaching each day with hope, confidence, and the expectation of success can propel us further than we imagined.

Three days before starting my second internship, I received news that my UX mentor had to leave. Such is life in the startup world; things move fast, and investments might fall through. Suddenly finding myself as the sole UX designer at the company was daunting. Initially, having a mentor was crucial to me, but I quickly shifted my mindset to see this change as an opportunity for personal growth and learning. "What am I supposed to learn from this?" This mindset has helped me a lot in the past🚀💡 Recognizing the need to trust my abilities as a UX designer, I reflected on two years of dedicated study and the significant free time I invested in UX. I just needed the chance to prove to myself that I was capable, and this situation provided it. 📚💪 Now halfway into my internship, I've conducted 30 interviews and tests, both internally and externally. Drawing from my experiences as a project leader, I developed a project plan, organized UX research documents and workshops, and started the implementation of a design system. 📊✏️ This journey has undoubtedly tested and strengthened my confidence in my skills as a UX designer. 💼💪 How do you navigate through changes? Do you adopt a specific mindset to guide you? 🔄💭 #UXdesign #PersonalGrowth #Mindset

Do you have advice for how to ACTUALLY get a job in UX for someone who: 1) has a PhD in Psychology 2) meets all the minimum research, writing, management, and data analyses skills required for UX. 3) has been searching for months and applies to 20 jobs per week 4) knows that they would be an amazingly exceptional team member. Or is it only people who have over 10 years UX experience getting UX jobs now-a-days? Yes, I know the market is tough. Yes, it's all about networking. Yes, competition is tough with UX bachelor degrees and students who get UX internships, and UX layoffs, etc. But why is it so hard for a young, Black, educated woman to get a UX job?

A rarity in UXR - 4 Junior or Entry level positions. UXR has a problem with too few Junior-level positions. Most positions are asking for 3-5+ years of experience. How is someone entering the field from school or transitioning from another role supposed to start their careers?

This summer, I had a wonderful experience as a UX design intern at Emerson 🚀. It was a perfect blend of fun and hard work, and I truly appreciate the work-life balance here. The learning curve was steep📈, and I’d love to share some key takeaways with you all: 𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀💡: Even as an intern, your ideas matter. Don’t shy away from speaking up. Some ideas might be rejected, but that’s part of the process—stay motivated! 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆🗣️: While learning the design process is essential, presenting design solutions clearly and communicating your findings effectively to stakeholders is equally important. Clear communication ensures that your work is understood and valued. 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁-𝗘𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸-𝗘𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁🛠️: Understanding development helps you design practical solutions that can be developed within tight deadlines and allow for better collaboration with developers in an agile environment. 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹✅: Always push for customer feedback. Designing based on assumptions can lead to failure—validate and iterate as needed. #UXDesign #SummerInternship #Learning #ProductDesign #Emerson #WorkLifeBalance #Takeaways #LetsGo

Yesterday, I was asked about transitioning to UX research from academia, and here's a summary of what I had to say: 🦋 Assess the Landscape: Recognize the current challenges in the UX job market. While some may advise caution, follow your passion and pursue what aligns with your goals. 🦋 Showcase Your Skills: Leverage your qualitative and quantitative research expertise as a PhD to stand out in UX research roles. Create a portfolio spotlighting case studies and relevant projects. 🦋 Gain Practical Experience: Explore internships or volunteer opportunities in tech companies to gain hands-on experience with the product lifecycle. Collaborate with UX designers, developers, and other teams to learn UX-specific research methods. 🦋 Network on LinkedIn: Boost your visibility by actively engaging with industry professionals on LinkedIn. Comment on posts, share insights, and contribute to the UX community. 📅 For me, my next step is to create my online portfolio. 💡If you are a PhD or PhD student thinking of transitioning to UX research, what is next in your to-do list. #phdjourney #nonclinical #nonacademic #uxresearch #portfolio

From Product and Web Research to UX Research!!! Hello LinkedIn Fam! 👋 Timi here, and I'm excited to share that I'd like to transition from being a product and web research assistant to being a UX researcher. It's been 4 years in my current field and my passion for understanding user behavior and overall love for research has led me to pivot towards UX research. Over the next 90 days, I'll be documenting my journey as I take courses, watch videos, get mentorship, apply for internships, (maybe even get a job). Why am I doing this publicly? -Accountability: Sharing my progress with this community will help me stay committed and consistent. -Learning: I hope to gain valuable insights and feedback from experienced UX researchers and people who have grown by documenting their processes. -Inspiration: I aim to inspire others who might be considering a similar transition and show that it's never too late (or too early) to pursue your passions. I would love to hear your tips on how to stay consistent in this journey. Your support and guidance will be incredibly valuable as I take on this challenge. P.S. I'm still accepting gigs in product and web research, so feel free to reach out if you need my expertise in these areas! Thank you for joining me on this adventure! #day1 #UXResearch #CareerTransition #LearningJourney #90DaysChallenge

From Excitement to Disappointment: My Internship Experience 🚀💔 I want to share my recent hiring journey as a UX Designer intern, which turned out to be quite a learning experience. A few months ago, I was thrilled to be selected as a UX Designer intern at a company (I won't be taking company's name). After the interview, assessment task and submitting all required documents, I eagerly awaited my start date, excited to learn and grow. But things took an unexpected turn. Despite multiple calls, the recruiter was unresponsive. When he finally answered, he promised to call back but never did. Days turned into weeks, with vague excuses like "the manager isn't available." After 1.5 months of waiting, I directly asked for clarity. The response? "Sorry, we won't be hiring you because the manager isn't saying anything about you." (I was like WTF is this how you guys run your company? even though it's not that big company that would take almost 2 months to hire an intern). It was disheartening and unprofessional. I had worked hard for this opportunity and felt deeply disappointed. Sharing this to let others know: persistence is key, but sometimes, the process isn't as smooth as we hope. To other designers out there, stay resilient and keep pushing forward!! 💪✨ #RecruitmentTransparency #ProfessionalismMatters #RespectCandidates #CareerJourney #FairHiring #UXDesign #DesignCommunity
